[24:06] We were looking at resurrection. The idea of resurrection. We looked at the woman of Nain's son that was resurrected. Although he was physically resurrected.

[24:17] We thought about. Not only had he got his physical life back. But the mother also got her life back. And we now come to this second resurrection account.

[24:32] Raising of Jairus' daughter. The morning, we have the resurrection of our son. This evening, we have the resurrection of our daughter.

[24:44] Now all the time Luke's been. We're still in Luke's gospel. Now all the time Luke's been writing. And gathering all this information for his friend Theophilus. It says that at the beginning.

[24:55] Luke's gone out. Luke's a doctor. He's gone out. He's researched the stories. Gathered them all. Compiled them into this gospel. And he says. At the beginning.

[25:06] He says. I've formed an orderly account for you Theophilus. He's formed this orderly story. Of the things that have happened. Concerning Jesus Christ. So that you may have certainty. About what you read.

[25:18] And certainty. About what I record. And so. Likewise. When we read this account. It should impress upon us.

[25:29] His convictions. That people would know. That people would hear. All about Jesus Christ. And that they too. Would have certainty. Certainty.

[25:39] As Jesus. That can heal. Certainty. Of Jesus. That can bring. Life. Certainty. Of all his promises. And certainty.

[26:25] Turned a few pages. But Luke's been recording. Everything that's been going on. We've had this. First resurrection. The woman in name's son. We've heard about.

[26:37] If you were to go through these. You would hear about. Jesus. Calming the storm. Jesus. His power. By his word. Again. We saw the power of that word. In the morning. To heal the centurion's servant.

[26:50] To bring life. To the widow's son. The word. Is what calmed the storm. His power. Over evil.

[27:03] Removing the demon. Possessed. Spirits. From. The man. The legion. His power. Over disease. As we'll see here. And again.

[27:16] We'll see. Power to bring life. For the second time. In raising. Jairus's. Daughter. So we'll follow. With the same points. That we used in the morning.

[27:27] Following our CPR. That. Life. Giving. Means. Of man. We pray for a greater. Spiritual.

[27:37] Life. Giving. Mean. To be with us. First. First point. Is. To look at the crowds. And the one who comes. Second point. If we looked at the plans.

[27:49] That have been postponed. And thirdly. The reactions. And responses. Of people. In this passage. So as we look at Jairus's daughter. What's her first point.

[28:00] In the crowds. And the one. Who comes. Now Luke's been saying. Jesus has been traveling around this area. Of Galilee. This region. In the beginning of chapter 8.

[28:13] He says that. He clarifies it. He's been saying. Jesus has been traveling through the cities. The villages. Proclaiming. And bringing the good news. About the kingdom of God. To all people.

[28:24] And together. With the disciples. He's made a journey. Across the sea of Galilee. Just before the passage. We read there. He's come across. The man. Possessed with a legion.

[28:35] He's. Cleansed that man. The legion. Has gone into the pigs. They've. Gone into the sea. But when the crowd. Gather there.

[28:46] To see this spectacle. It says that. The people came. From the. From the town. I think it is. From the city. To see what had gone on. To hear these reports. How do they react?

[28:58] How does this crowd react? Well they send him away. They didn't want him. To. Be there. They had that fear. That we saw in the morning. There was a fear of.

[29:09] Jesus. But it was a fear. That didn't. Glorify. That we saw in the morning. It was a fear that. Pushed him away. A fear that said.

[29:23] I don't want you. Get away from me. I wonder if that's the reaction. Of any. Tonight. But in contrast.

[29:35] There's another crowd. On the other side. Of the lake gallery. Picking up a reading. Verse 40. It says. When Jesus returned. The crowd. The crowd welcomed him. There's another crowd.

[29:46] Waiting on the other side. And waiting for him to come. Wondering probably. Where he's gone. He's already. Healed. The woman of Nain. The woman of Nain's son.

[29:58] And this news. Has probably spread. Throughout the region. He's healed the centurion. This man Jesus. He can heal the sick.

[30:10] He can heal and raise the dead. Of course they come. To see this man. Who has done these things.

[30:22] That no one else could do. But the story. As we read it. It turns to focus on one man. It turns to focus on this character. Jadus.

[30:34] And it tells us. That Jadus. In verse 41. He was a ruler. Of the synagogue. Now.

[30:45] That man. I didn't realize this. But that man. Being a ruler of the synagogue. He had oversight. Over worship. In the synagogue. So he had. Oversight. Over the readings. Oversight.

[30:55] Who would lead. Who would read. He was in charge. Of orchestrating. The worship. Of God. How it was done.

[31:06] And the order. In which it was done. Probably a man. That people would have. Looked up to. And look to. When they. Face difficulties. For answers. Others. Now.

[31:17] You don't get into a position. Like that. For no reason. This man. More than likely. New scripture. More than likely. Well respected.

[31:30] Well known. And such a character. What do we see him do. In this passage. Well tells us there. In verse 41. The ruler of the synagogue.

[31:43] Falls. At Jesus's. Feet. And implored him. To come to his eyes. Really that's just begging him. Falling before Jesus's feet. Begging him for help.

[31:54] It's kind of a big deal. That a man. Of such a position. Religious leader. Pleading before. Jesus.

[32:06] Now being a ruler. He would have been. Almost. In charge of. Or over. The scribes. And the Pharisees. And we read so much. About the scribes. And the Pharisees. Questioning Jesus.

[32:19] Trying to catch him out. Trying to. Trip him up. So this man. Would have been. Overseen. Scribes. And Pharisees. Maybe he had them in his ear.

[32:32] About Jesus. Have you seen what this Jesus is doing? Have you heard what this Jesus is saying? Who he claims to be. Putting Jesus down. But he's hearing all these things.

[32:44] About who this man is. Surely. The pride. The pride. And the scribes. And the Pharisees. Was opposing.

[32:57] Just like those. On the other side of the sea. It wasn't a. Waiting for Jesus. It wasn't a. Welcoming Jesus. It was a. Pushing him away. It's going to be one or the other. Are you seeking Jesus?

[33:12] Are you waiting for him? Or are you pushing him away? It all comes down to pride.

[33:24] It all comes down to your heart. But we'll see. There's no room for pride. When life.

[33:37] Hangs in the balance. When the vulnerability. And the fragility. Of life. Is knocking on your door. There's no room for pride.

[33:51] Knowing that your. Life is in the hands of God. Puts us humbly. In our place. That's why he was begging.

[34:03] Wasn't it? Tells us. That he was. Begging. Imploring him. Come to my house. Because.

[34:14] In verse 42. He had an only daughter. About 12 years of age. And she was dying. Dying at the point.

[34:24] Of death. It's almost as if she's just about gone. It's almost as if time is almost up. It's almost as if he's running out of options. Nothing else to do. It's not a time to hold any pride.

[34:37] If Jesus was. Who he had heard him to be. He was his only hope.

[34:51] Pride was out the window. He. Seems like he couldn't care less. What anyone else thought of him. What the scribes and Pharisees. Said about him.

[35:03] It didn't matter. When the fragility of life. Was staring him in the face. He needed someone.

[35:15] That would do something. Effective. In his life. And there was no one else. In his view.

[35:27] Who could do anything for him. As if this was his last resort. Can this Jesus. Do it. And he comes.

[35:39] We hear that he. Pleads there. With Jesus. And it seems that Jesus. Went willingly. With this man.

[35:50] Jairus. So it seems to be. Without question. It's interesting. That's like. You're the scribes.

[36:01] And the Pharisees. Questioning. And Jesus. Is questioning back. And proving them wrong. And this man. Is a ruler of the synagogue. He's. He just goes with him. He can see the genuineness.

[36:13] Of this. Digging. His coming. His genuine. And it's almost as if he just. He knows. And we saw that in the morning. The woman of Nain.

[36:25] Jesus saw her. Jesus knew. What she was going through. And equally. We could say the same. Surely. Of Jairus. Jairus.

[36:37] Jairus trusting and hoping. That Jesus would come. Before it was too late. The crowd following behind. Probably hoping to see something spectacular.

[36:51] Asking. Could he do it? Sometimes we need to just come to Jesus for help.

[37:04] But quite often it's pride that's stopping us. Quite often we're pushing Jesus away.

[37:17] Just now. Maybe we're doing well in life. Maybe we're just starting out in life. Maybe we're well known. Maybe we're well respected.

[37:30] Maybe you know that your colleagues, your friends will laugh at you for seeking out Jesus. Sometimes he brings us to the point where we just need to come.

[37:46] I remember reading something many years ago. Something along the lines of. If we don't listen to Jesus. If we don't listen to Jesus. He'll throw a brick at us. Stopping us in our tracks.

[38:00] So that we come to him. Has Jesus brought you to the point where you need to come?

[38:10] Have you been brought to fall before Jesus? We've been looking at Psalm 71, the prayer meeting.

[38:26] And the psalmist there cries out to God, Do not put me to shame. As he trusts in Jesus. And those who put their trust in him will not be put to shame.

[38:43] When others around are laughing and mocking. And we see that in the passage. Is Jairus put to shame for trusting?

[38:58] For falling on his knees before Jesus? And begging for him to save the Lord? Because his daughter. We see that he isn't put to shame. But we'll see that some are.

[39:15] We must come to Jesus with a humble heart. It's a difficult place sometimes to come. But it's a good place.

[39:27] It's a secure place. A place for this hope. And as Jesus travels with Jairus, we read that the crowd were pressing around him.

[39:42] It's almost as if they're hindering him progressing. You can imagine Jairus sort of trying to speed things along. Maybe making clear in the way.

[39:54] We're in a rush, Jesus. We feel like he's losing the battle. His plans, his own plans have been thwarted. Only more so to be postponed.

[40:08] And we have that postponement as our second point that comes with this lady. That comes just straight into this story.

[40:21] So our second point, plans postponed. Now our focus will not be entirely on this woman. I want to kind of focus on Jairus and the resurrection account.

[40:32] But we can't avoid this lady. She's central to how the story unfolds after all. She comes to Jesus likewise.

[40:44] Jairus comes. But comes in a completely different manner. With a completely different issue. Jairus, someone well known, falls right before the crowd.

[41:02] He's not hiding anything. This woman, she hid in the crowd. probably disguising a true problem hiding her issues aren't we good at that maybe even hiding her face so that no one could identify her but no one could see her maybe just some watching online but she comes she would have been considered unclean because of this issue that she had of discharge of blood but she comes in this crowd quietly so that no one would see us no one would identify as a chance that maybe she would have been known it's not a new issue maybe she had been pronounced unclean a number of times and people would have known about everything certainly she had been through a few physicians she had spent all her money i think she would have been hiding all but she comes quietly reaches out to jesus when no one is looking to touch just a touch and jesus stops the crowd and says who touched me who touched me so much there's a bit of attention in the moment who touched me and it says all denied it 99.8 of the gathering the crowd didn't know what jesus was on about and even peter says master the crowds are surrounding you and they're pressing in on you so this is just silence jesus isn't moving until he finds out who touched me and then this woman comes forward this woman confesses this woman comes in fear everyone's been coming in fear and she falls at the feet of jesus trembling and she goes on to tell the story she's been had this issue of blood for 12 years same length of time that jesus's daughter lived every one of these days she suffered no one could help her but the touch of his garment immediately healed her and you can imagine where's jesus jesus is probably behind jesus looking at his watch trying to hurry things along and the last thing he needs is a story isn't it maybe we know what that feels like when we're in a rush and we're getting a story i don't need a story just now we need to get going we need to go it's always when we're in a rush there's something to slow us down especially on the road but jesus is there standing behind jesus standing beside jesus jesus deals with this woman in his own time and he says daughter your faith has made you well go in peace and when i was thinking looking at this passage i was wondering i wonder if jesus

[45:06] knew this woman as a ruler of the synagogue and had a woman with this issue that would have left out unclean likely who did she wouldn't have been able to attend any worship services maybe she had come many times and been pronounced unclean i don't know it's it's speculation but it would have been a lesson if it if he did that jesus would heal the one that was turned away by them that jesus would welcome her and give her time when they pushed her away the touch of faith in her life made all the difference but this postponing it causes a turn in the story causes a issue in the plan of jesus he goes there he had got jesus on his side to come to the house this plan subconsciously would have been get there see if jesus can heal there's a whole range of emotions going on in this man he's humbled by coming to fall before the feet of jesus he's got this hope of jesus actually coming to heal on his way he's got the frustrations of this woman hindering the progression of getting there and then right through into the door of his heart is gonna come running in sadness and pain in verse 49 it says while he was still speaking that's jesus someone from the ruler's house came and said your daughter is dead do not trouble the teacher anymore the delay was enough to be death but the lord had a plan in it all and we'll see an element of that god willing next week with lazarus the lord has his purpose even when it comes or even when death comes and it can be in the most painful times that he has his purpose why we cannot say and we dare not even say but what jesus what jesus did not do is he did not walk away from jesus in that moment in the moment when that came right into his heart he stuck with jesus he didn't leave him that gut-wrenching blow jesus knew and jesus comforted him comforted him with words do not fear only believe and she will be well trust me well trust me stick with me that's what happened he followed jesus he trusted him went to his house jesus went in and touched the dead body by taking her by the hand which for jesus would have had alarm bells all over touching a dead body rule of the synagogue making yourself unclean by touching someone else dead doesn't matter all these things are secondary in such a case

[49:07] holding her hand he said child arise in verse 54 and she got up and she ate the likelihood is again we're assuming but the likelihood is she might not have eaten for weeks before but she got up and she got up and ate showing the truth of the resurrection and the restoration that jesus had done in her life plans for a second funeral were cancelled because jesus brought life resurrecting power into the circumstance of sorrow but between jesus and the woman that comes there's faith on both sides isn't there faith in both these people to come they both come completely differently but they both come that's the most important thing and they have faith to hold on as well when the going gets tough they hold on and they trust and like the woman with issue of blood she's not ashamed nor was jesus ashamed to come and stand before her savior and to say it was me or i'm here for help or i need you they're both not ashamed and that faith is rewarded i trust in jesus and here jesus pretty much got his wee girl back and that causes no lack of reaction and responses in our last point so plans been postponed jesus plans plans for a second funeral but it caused surely reactions and responses and we see them in it how did the people respond well we need to sort of rewind slightly from the account of the resurrection of the child and we'll see that when jesus arrived at the house there again we have a crowd outside the house mourning for this child and weeping for her and of course that's to be expected that's quite normal in such a circumstance and as we said in the morning such occasions they would even hire professional mourners and maybe that is what's happening here as well they may have additional people there that have been paid either way it's a tragedy but how does jesus approach them well he says to them do not weep we had that in the morning as well but he adds to it here he says do not weep she is not dead she is sleeping the commentator beetle says that the use of sleep is not to say that the girl was physically sleeping but to show that jesus's death was not the end but the believer falls asleep in christ jesus because death is not the end and jesus says she's sleeping

[53:11] and the response from them they laughed they laughed and it says knowing she was dead i suppose in their time and culture they would have been more familiar with dealing with people that had passed away they knew fine this girl had died and what jesus said sounded absolutely ridiculous to them and i suppose in one sense we can see why they would have laughed if they had not heard about the woman of name's son if they had never heard about the hope of jesus bringing life back to that dead boy and so they laughed but they were left out as well and many will laugh and they were left at jesus at the gospel they won't give it a second thought but like them did they know about the woman of name's son did they know about the truth of luke writing this gospel so that theophilus would have certainty and that we would have certainty he's writing these things to be convinced john writes his gospel so that we may believe they're all writing with conviction with passion this needs to be known people need to understand people need to believe because it changes everything it's not to be laughed at the ones that laughed they were also left out they weren't in the house and he only takes in with him his three closest disciples and the the mother and father and surely that adds to the preciousness of this moment the reaction to what they saw was amazement in verse 56 the parents were amazed did they ever think it was possible did they ever think jesus would do such a thing for them so many questions they would have had but it all boils down to following and trusting jesus if he had walked away he would have not had that reward trusting in jesus's words to bring a life life jesus shows us the power in this word to bring you life and he asks if you will come come as you are come in your own way but come whatever way just come knowing him to be your only hope maybe you've looked for satisfactions in many other places in this world maybe you've spent all your time and effort looking for things that will please you and have found none maybe you're worried about your health and a bricks being thrown in your direction and life hangs in the balance and he's telling you to come and he's telling you to have faith in him trust in him

[57:11] one of the accommodators said there was many in the crowd who never touched him with faith is there some in this church who have not touched him with faith who have not come and said you know what i need you putting all pride aside realizing that we are so fragile all life is in his hands the giver of life and so we come in that fragility knowing that we need Jesus to save us no one else and nothing else in this world will do and he gives us the greater evidence of his power over death in his own resurrection he's saying you can trust me i have promised you life i have shown you life after death but we must fall at his feet putting our pride to one side it's best best to do it now and receive his grace than to do it at the judgment and receive his punishment judgment because jesus will come again in judgment and then we will see his works and whatever way the coins goes whatever way the judgment falls you'll be amazed some laughed at jesus and what he said he laughed at jesus's words but that girl walked out of that house they weren't laughing then they were certainly amazed though but it was amazement tainted with shame and embarrassment i was wrong i look a bit of a fool now jesus was right there i laughed but jesus who trusted in jesus he didn't care what anyone else thought didn't care about the shame of this world was he put shame of the world was he put to shame no psalm 71 in the prayer meeting those who trust in jesus are not put to shame and the psalmist there is crying out to jesus in the most difficult circumstance pleading with god do not put me to shame and he doesn't but those who experience shame are the ones that taunt him those that are on the other side there'll be no laughing at the resurrection the lord will silence

[61:19] all doubters all mockers when they see his power return when jesus came to the disciples it changed everything for them when they knew for certain when when thomas had all his doubts displaced when jesus stood there alive and ate with them it changed everything they were terrified disciples until that moment and then they went out convicted trusting in jesus knowing that even death did not matter because they knew of a greater life trusting in jesus they would not be put to shame their name has not been put to shame and those who trust in jesus will not be put to shame they will know the immeasurable riches of jesus christ forever and ever so within this crowd are you coming are you calling on jesus are you willing to give up your own plans and your pride to follow before him in faith what is your reaction what is your response what if you hear all this and you don't respond to to miss out to not trust to hear these things and to be lost to be put to shame for not believing for not come put your trust in jesus come to him and know his riches forever and ever amen i'll conclude with prayer we're saying after our father in heaven we pray that you would bless your word to us speak to us may we come as we struggle sometimes to come but may we put our faith in you and trust in you and know that there is no shame in coming to your feet and pleading for help and salvation so be with us we ask in jesus name amen we'll sing in scottish psalter psalm 33 sing in verse 18 to the end of that song the lord is ever nigh to them that be of broken spirit to them he safely doth afford no i've got the wrong sound sorry behold on those that do him fear the lord doth set his eye even those who on his mercy do with confidence rely from death to free their soul and dearth life unto them to yield our soul doth wait upon the lord he is our help and shield says in his holy name we trust our heart shall joyful be lord let thy mercy be on us as we do hope in thee so we'll stand to sing these words to god's praise
