And may we gather together to lift up your name. As we gather to remember the work of Jesus, to praise his name, to praise his name, to praise his name, remember our resurrected Savior, who died for us, that we may be cleansed from all sin, that we may be cleansed in the sight of God.
And that through his sacrifice, our most perfect sacrifice, we can approach the throne of grace in his name. As we think about your greatness, your majesty, your holiness.
And as Isaiah saw the vision of the throne of God, he fell in fear. And Lord, we pray that you would give us some understanding of what it means to come before you.
We come before you in weakness. We come before you as sinners. We come before you knowing that we follow our own desires, knowing that we have been chasing the wind in our lives.
And we often do, even as believers, we go wrong and we go astray. And we cry out that we are unclean. We cry out that we are unclean.
So let us stand in awe. That we can approach you as our loving, heavenly Father. With that childlike simplicity, that childlike faith, that we can hold our hands up to you and cry, Abba, Father.
Come to you in our needs. Come to you in our worries. As we gather here as a collective people, those online as well. We pray that you would give us your peace.
A peace that passes all understanding and calmer worries. Whatever worries we have. Whatever concerns we have. Lord, speak to us.
We pray that we would hear your voice. Still and silent. And that we would sit at your feet. That we would have minds willing to hear.
To learn. To be taught. Give us that humble spirit. We pray as we gather. We pray for the congregation.
We pray for those that are at home. We pray for those that cannot make it out. They don't have the physical strength in them anymore. Those that have concerns over their health.
We pray for them. We pray that you would be near to them. And we pray that your word would be a blessing to you. As we gather together. We pray for David, our minister. We pray that as he takes a time of holiday.
We pray that he would be refreshed. We pray that he would have an enjoyable break with his family. We pray that you would do our work through him as he returns.
That your spirit would accompany his preaching. His pastoring care of the flock here. We pray for the whole family and the wider family.

We know that the threat and the dangers can come in our old age. And experience often doesn't mean everything.

That you would be constantly over him and watching him. We pray for our young. We pray that they would be raised up knowing and trusting in you. We pray for those at camp.
We thank you for camps. And we pray that you would sow seeds in their lives. In their younger days. Seeds that many of us have heard the words of God.
Been taught things from a young age. Even when we didn't understand them. And even as we grow old. The things that we didn't understand seem to take root in us.
And help us to grow. Help us to understand. Help us to flourish. We pray for the gospel message today. We pray for those who preach it and proclaim it.
We pray that your spirit would accompany it with power. And might. In the preacher's weakness. We pray for Anthony. As he preaches in Lealborough and Scalpe today.
We pray your blessing on them as they gather. We think of Gordon and Helmsday. We continue to uphold him and Gillian. And family in prayer and training. We pray for Stuart and Joyce and the family.
And we pray that you would likewise prepare them. For studies this coming out. We pray for all who are anxious and concerned.
Whether it be in practical matters or matters of health. We pray that you would be near to them. And we pray that you would still them with your presence. We know that you are a God that is a God of all comfort.
A God that draws near to the broken hearted. So we pray that you would be with them. And wrap your loving, fatherly, tender arms round them and over them.

God you're right God made us in our mum's tummies and Psalm 71 tells us that God knew us even before we had a body and our soul you know what our soul it'll live forever our soul it'll live forever so who do you think is the best person to look after our soul forever?
you're right God and we need to ask God to keep our soul every day when we feel sore inside we ask God to keep our soul keep me safe even when we're hurting we go to the doctor for our body when our soul so we ask God to keep us the best person to keep our soul keep us forever and keep us safe where will we be safe with Jesus and God?

Oh, God. Amen. Amen. The last time I was with you, it was Sunday evening, two weeks ago.
We're looking at Ezekiel, the valley of dry bones. It was sort of an introduction to the idea of resurrection. The valley of dry bones were there, just dry, very dry, it says, no life in them at all.
And the Lord told Ezekiel to prophesy, the bones were there, but they weren't alive.
And they were there, but they were there, but they were there.
And we just looked at that idea of resurrection in the Old Testament, bringing something back to life that was once dead. And I want to look at the next, today and next week, God willing, at the work of Jesus in resurrecting those whom he met while on earth.
Because it's central to Christianity. John Stott would say, Christianity in its very essence, a resurrection religion. The concept of resurrection lies at its heart.
If you remove it, Christianity is destroyed. And we gather here, this Lord's Day, to remember a resurrected Lord Jesus, who we worship.
But I think if we're honest enough to say, it's not something that's easily comprehended. It's something that's quite hard for us to grasp.
Especially when we know death, we know the emptiness of it, we know the finality of it. Resurrection seems a hard concept to lay hold of.
It's one of these things where we speak to someone and say, you know, you wouldn't believe it if you didn't see it. And that was the case for Thomas, one of the disciples. He followed Jesus.
He didn't believe until he saw. He had his own doubts. As we say, in our own hearts, we can have our doubts. And we can find it actually hard to believe.
But there can be life after death. But what the Bible promises is actually that everyone will have life after death.
Everyone will be resurrected, in fact. Some to heaven and some to hell. The proof to resurrect was shown to us by Jesus as he walked in this world.
The proof of God's power was shown in Jesus as he himself was resurrected. It's almost as if a preview to that power was given by Jesus.
It was on display then when Jesus, the resurrected Savior, stood with the disciples and spoke to them and ate food with them. The power is there on display.
It's going to happen. It's what they were told. It's going to happen is what we are told. Resurrection is going to happen.
Thomas Watson said that we are more sure to arise out of our graves than out of our beds.
It's a sure thing. The question is whether we believe it or not, isn't it? This morning as we gathered, do we believe that God has the power to bring life to what is dead?
Whether you do believe it or not, doesn't negate the fact that it's going to happen. But for you, as it happens, what is the result?
What will the judge say over you? If you believe your soul is safe.
So you're saying to the kids, you believe in Jesus, your soul is safe forever. Do you believe in a resurrected Jesus this morning?
So as we want to look at these, we'll have two resurrection accounts today. We'll look at first at this woman of name's son. And in the evening, we'll look, God willing, at Jairus' daughter.
And God willing, next week, we'll return to Lazarus. And what I find surprising about the widow of name's son is, well, it's only recorded in the Gospel of Luke. It's a resurrection account for sure, but it's maybe not so well known as any of the other ones.
If we were to ask the children about their favourite stories about Jesus, even if we asked ourselves and thought about our own favourite stories about Jesus, I don't suppose this would be our favourite or the most well-known one, or even in the top three.
But there's no escaping the significance of it. The significance of this moment. Someone who was dead is brought back to life.
So as we think about this account of the woman of name's son, we have three points to consider. First one is crowds and the one who comes.
Second point will be plans postponed. And the third point is reactions and responses. Now if you take the first letter of each of these, you are sepia, which is a life-giving emergency procedure.
That we do. But I wonder today, will the spirit bring life to us? So firstly, as we look at this passage.
Crowds and the one who comes. Now really, there's a picture of the scene for us. What's going on here? We have read about the centurion's servant.
We've read about that healing. We've read about the power of the word of Jesus. And we're going to see that power in action. That word in action in a greater sense.
It tells us that Jesus was in a place called Capernaum. And they say that there are days travel between Capernaum and name.
That's interesting. We'll come back to that. But you'll notice as he travels, he's not travelling alone. There's a crowd with him. When the centurion sends his servants, there's a crowd following.
And soon afterward, he comes to a town called Maine. It says in verse 11, you'll see it there. And his disciples and a great crowd went with him.
Probably a crowd that listened to his sermons. Probably a crowd that were inquisitive. Inquisitive, what's going to happen to the centurion's servant? They didn't actually get to see what happened.
But regardless, there's a crowd there. But as they reach this place called Maine, they meet another crowd, don't they?
As they drew near in verse 12, it tells us there was a man who had died. He was being carried out. The only son of his mother.
And she was a widow. And a considerable crowd from the town was with her. There were two crowds coming together and meeting just outside the city gates of Maine.
Maybe this man that had died, maybe he was well respected. That's why they were such a crowd. Maybe he was well known.
Nonetheless, he faced death. But also, in their day, they would have hired professional mourners. It seems strange to us. They would have hired people almost to...
I don't know if it was to add to the solemnity or the sorrow that there would be more people there. I don't know exactly why.
But they would hire these professional mourners. They would have been joining in. But also, if the procession, as we know, a funeral procession, those that had been standing by, they would have joined in.
So you can see how a crowd would have easily gathered if it had walked through Maine itself. And those of the city or town had gathered and followed through with this mourning woman.
Because of all the people of the two crowds, there's one that stands out. And it's this woman. As Keener, the commentator, says, that this bereft mother would have walked in front of the procession.
And you can imagine the crowd following Jesus. The procession following this widow. In her mourning, coming together.
You have a crowd centred on death, sorrow, sadness. You have a crowd following hopes of life, healing, wisdom.
Jesus was heading for the city, it says, while the mourners were heading for the cemetery. Two different crowds.
But who's the one that comes? We have the crowds, but who comes into this story? Well, it's actually Jesus that comes into this story. Jesus is the one leading them to Maine.
He takes them to Maine. And it says that from Capernaum to Maine was a day's journey.
Culturally, their bodies would have been buried within the day. So we actually have Jesus and the crowd having set off to meet, to come to this woman just as the likelihood is that man was dying.
He came to meet her. He came to meet her in her sorrow. The fact is that the woman herself shows no signs of coming to Jesus.
Maybe she never knew about him. Maybe she never heard about the Messiah, the healer, the wonderful counsellor. She's not pleading for help like blind Bartimaeus, or as we'll see Jairus was tonight.
Jesus just comes and meets her in her need. Sometimes it can be like that for us. We can be experiencing the sorrows of this life and knowing the sin, the pain of it.
Sometimes Jesus will walk in. The question is really, I wonder what crowd you're walking with today. Spiritually, it's going to be one or the other.
Are we walking with those who know sorrow, sadness and death? Or are we following Jesus knowing hope and life?
Whether we are well respected, whether we are well thought of, whatever size our funeral will be, at the end of the day, it comes down to who we're following.
If we follow our sinfulness, it will lead to an empty cemetery.
But if we follow Jesus, we will be led into the city of glory. So who are you following? These two powers almost come together and meet.
One overpowered the other. Jesus overpowered death. I wonder if Jesus sees you in your need.
I wonder if Jesus knows your worries and your sorrows and in providence for whatever reason you're here. That you would hear this message.
So almost if you've come with a crowd and so almost if the word of Jesus is just coming to meet you. Coming to speak to you.
Coming to give you a hope. Coming to give you life. But when we do meet with Jesus and his words it should have a change and an effect on our plans.
If our plans are, we have our plans. We all have our own plans, don't we? That's our second point. We've had the crowds and the one who comes. What about our plans? Plans that have been postponed as we see in this passage.
We all have plans. We all make plans. Well, we write them down subconsciously. We make them. We have our own ideas. Today in the story here it's this man's funeral.
The plans were made. Plans they didn't want to ever have to think about making. not only is this widow here grieving the loss of her son we're also told about this widow about this lady that she was a widow.
Now that that's significant in their day and what it meant for her and her plants in her head. She wouldn't have been writing them down but as she's walking there in front of that in front of the procession I'm sure her mind would have been thinking about the future because those that would provide for her have gone.
Her husband's gone. Her son's now gone. Her only son. Who's going to provide for her? Who's going to help her? In her day it would have been she would have had to rely on the good of neighbours public charity if she didn't have her relative to look after her.
You can almost feel the anguish of her sorrows and what's going to happen? What's tomorrow going to look like? I might have enough for the month ahead but what about the years ahead?
Who's going to provide for me? But you notice there in verse 13 it says something really important and when the Lord saw her the Lord saw her and understood her feelings he saw her need he had compassion on her he knew exactly what she was feeling what she was worried about what her struggles were for the future as she thought about it tried to comprehend it she had a thousand and one reasons to weep but what does Jesus say to her?
Do not weep we find we find that might be a strange thing to say how could she not weep?
and it's what Jesus does is strange more so he just goes up and stops the procession stops the plans everyone would have been looking what's he doing?
and he touches the beer there would have been a flatbed that they would carry the body on not a coffin as we would be more familiar with he touches it and that would have made him unclean and everyone's there probably going what are you doing?
it's a no-no really they would avoid touching a touching a dead body you think of the good Samaritan the priest who walked by the man because he thought he was dead didn't want to be unclean didn't want to be considered unclean Jesus stops what's going on touches what that man lay on and then he says what would have shocked them all young man I say to you arise Jesus the son of man speaks to these dead bones just like we had in Ezekiel can they hear?
can they get up? can they live? that's the question isn't it? that word and that power is shown and displayed to them all so that there would be no one that would do it the dead man sat up and began to speak there wouldn't be many doctors that will have put that on patient notes just got up and spoke and then he actually walked and Jesus walks him to his mother gives him back let me ask you who gets their life back?
the man the boy the son physically he gets his life back but really it's another isn't it? whatever plans she had in her mind subconsciously this changed everything her future was not so sad death where does your sting?
with Jesus I wonder is there anyone worried about their future maybe feeling like you've lost everything fearing for tomorrow fearing for today as we were saying maybe the plans you've had yourself for years are just torn up because of something that's happened and subconsciously the future is so unknown well the Lord knows we need to be reminded of that again and again the Lord knows and he sees you in a way that no one else sees you he saw this woman like no one else saw he had compassion on her and this resurrection account that we have here it's more about the living than it is about the dead isn't it it's more about this woman than it is about the son but isn't that what the resurrection message of the gospel is for it's not for the dead it's for the living it's for you and for me that it might change everything for us physically you might be fine but inside what about your soul wish your hope wish your peace for tomorrow what's your future looking like what's your resurrection looking like so saying which crowd are you following
Jesus gives the living real life eternal life and maybe it's a surprise for you to hear that maybe you didn't expect to meet with these words this morning maybe you've been challenged about what the future means for you are you following Jesus he knows your need he wants the living to live and in his compassion he sends his word that you might hear and understand and know that it's a power over death that he has that if you trust in
Jesus you will live forever trust in the resurrection you will live changes our plans but what about our last point reactions and responses now if we read in verse 16 you'll see how they reacted in their story fear sees them all and they glorified God saying a great prophet has risen among us and God has visited his people and the report spread through the whole Judea and surrounding country they were full of fear they had never seen anything like this that's both the crowds everyone that was there this action this display this moment just got their attention the second thing was they glorified
God they acknowledged who else can do such a thing who can give life but God they say a great prophet has risen among us because they would be comparing Jesus to Elijah and Elijah they were great prophets and they both raised sons and the account of Elijah there's lots of similarities between this account here they knew there's a man from God here no one else can do this they couldn't deny what had happened and they told everyone the report spread through the whole of Judea how did this dead man live it's the power of Jesus' word you know I wish I wish I knew a bit more details all these stories when you started looking at I wish I knew a bit more detail
I wish I knew what happened to this man was he sick was it an accident we don't need to know it's not the cause of death that's important it's the cause of life it's a word of God it's a power of God and it is to God they give the glory and that word comes to us again this morning and we pray it will come with power to revive souls that are dead bring life to us we pray do you recognise what's your reaction what's your response to Jesus who gives life here to the dead life to the living he wants to give you a life and he's needing a response from you does it fill you with fear that he has power over your life or are you full of praise for exactly the same reason because no matter what happens in the life of the
Christian you're safe you're kept you can praise God because he has a power over death he has the power to meet you and know your need your concerns your worries your doubts if you believe in Jesus it gives you a peace and a peace that passes under strength not like this world gives to us it's completely different different to ever imagine different how you could ever have planned what crowd are you with what's your plans if you look ahead in the future what's your reaction and response this morning to the resurrection accounts of Jesus
