[0:00] Well, welcome to you this evening as we gather to worship God. Thank you for such a warm welcome to the door. We trust that together we will know the promised blessing of the Lord, drawing near as we read his word, sing his word, and listen to what he has to say on this Easter Sunday evening.
[0:27] May we know the blessing of what that all stands for. I'm going to read a call of worship on these beautiful words from Philippians that speaks of both the humiliation of Jesus and his exaltation.
[0:47] Reminds us of his crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, and the reality he's coming back.
[0:58] Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself.
[1:11] By taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men, and being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
[1:25] Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed in him the name that is above every name, so that in the name of Jesus, every name should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
[1:57] May the Lord indeed bless that reading of his holy word. The first singing this evening is in Gaelic, and we'll remain seated as we sing the double verse in Psalm 68 and verse 18.

[9:37] Thank you. Before we sing again, let's turn to the passage that we looked at this morning. And God will we look further tonight.
[9:48] Luke's Gospel, chapter 24. Luke's Gospel, chapter 24.
[10:09] And we'll read from the beginning. Let us hear God's Word.
[10:19] But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
[10:33] But when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.
[10:45] And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, Why do you seek the living among the dead? He's not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.
[11:08] And they remembered his words. And returning from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary, the mother of James, and the other women with them who told them these things to the apostles.
[11:23] But these words seemed to them an idle tale. They did not believe them. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb. Stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves.
[11:37] And he went home, marvelling at what he had seen and what had happened. That very day, two of them were going on to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.
[11:49] And they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself threw near and went with them.
[12:01] But their eyes were kept from recognising him. And he said to them, What is this conversation that you're holding with each other as you walk? And they stood still, looking sad.
[12:13] Then one of them named Cleopas answered him, Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days? And he said to them, What things?
[12:26] And they said to him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, A man who was a prophet, mighty indeed, And word before God and all the people. And how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, And crucified him.
[12:43] But we had hoped that this was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, It's now the third day since these things happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us.
[12:57] They were at the tomb early in the morning. And when they did not find his body, They came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, Who said that he was alive.
[13:08] Some of those who were there with us went to the tomb and found it, Just as the women had said. But him they did not see. And he said to them, O foolish ones and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.
[13:25] Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory? And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
[13:41] So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going further. But they urged him strongly, saying, Stay with us, For it's toward evening and the day is now far spent.
[13:55] So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, He took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened.
[14:06] And they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, Did not our hearts burn within us While he talked to us on the road, While he opened to us the scriptures?
[14:22] And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven. And those who were with them gathered together. Saying, The Lord has risen indeed. And has appeared to Simon.
[14:36] Then they told what had happened on the road. And how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread. I'm going to continue to the end of the chapter. Verse 36.
[14:47] And as they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them And said to them, Peace to you. But they were startled and frightened And thought they saw a spirit.
[14:59] And he said to them, Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet. That it is I myself.
[15:11] Touch me and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones As you see that I have. And when he had said this, He showed them his hands and his feet.
[15:23] And while they were still disbelieving for joy, Still disbelieved for joy, And were marvelling, He said to them, Have you anything here to eat? They gave him a piece of broiled fish.
[15:37] And he took it and ate it before them. Then he said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you While I was still with you. That everything written about me In the law of Moses and the prophets And the Psalms must be fulfilled.
[15:53] Then he opened their minds To understand the scriptures And said to them, Thus it is written That the Christ should suffer. And on the third day Rise from the dead.
[16:05] And that repentance For the forgiveness of sins Should be proclaimed in his name To all nations Beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.
[16:17] And behold, I am sending the promise Of my Father upon you. But stay in the city Until you are clothed With power from on high. And he led them out As far as Bethany.
[16:30] And lifting up his hands He blessed them. While he blessed them He parted from them And was carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him And returned to Jerusalem With great joy.
[16:48] And were continually In the temple Blessing God. May the Lord add his blessing To that reading. We are going to sing From Psalm 24 Verses 7 to 10 In the Scottish Psalter.
[17:05] And when I was listening To Alistair Begg On this passage He raised the question I wonder What the witnesses sang As they saw Jesus Being lifted up.
[17:21] They would have known This psalm Very well. And it's fitting To have been sung.
[17:32] They worshipped. They would have certainly Been singing this As we heard this morning. They knew their Old Testament. And that Jesus Had given them That wonderful Bible study.
[17:45] That so many of us Would have wanted to be in On the road to Emmaus. But he carried Teaching With the other disciples As we'll look at Later on.
[18:01] You gates Lift up your heads And high ye doors That last for a Be lifted up And so the king Of glory Enter me And they saw Jesus Being lifted up Taken into the cloud Out of sight.

[21:21] Amen. Amen. Amen. We'll now turn to God's word as we find it in the Acts of the Apostles or the Acts of the Holy Spirit or the Acts of Jesus, probably more appropriately stated.
[21:40] Acts chapter 1, verses 1 to 11, where we have Luke, the doctor, the historian, beginning his second volume.
[21:52] Obviously wrote the book of Luke and he also wrote the book of Acts. And he wrote it to a man called Otheophilus, who was a gentry and someone of quite importance, giving the evidence of the resurrection, giving the life of Jesus.
[22:14] And here we have, in this first book, Otheophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach until the day when he was taken up.
[22:27] After he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles, whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
[22:48] And while staying with them, he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait. For the promise of the Father, which he said, you heard from me. For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.
[23:07] So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? He said to them, it's not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.
[23:27] And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth. And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight.
[23:47] And while they were gazing into heaven, as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes and said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven?
[24:05] This Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. May the Lord add his blessing to that reading of his own holy word.
[24:22] Before we sing, let's draw near to God again in prayer. Oh, Heavenly Father, we ask you, Lord, that we would know that you are a promise keeper.
[24:37] And that, Lord, when we come in and through the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we can dare stand in your presence.
[24:51] But, Lord, our heads are bowed because it's of amazing grace. It's because of how you freely offer salvation to all who come at the cost of your Son dying in a room and in our stead.
[25:27] But we rejoice tonight that you are no longer in the grave. We rejoice, in fact, that you are high and lifted up.
[25:43] And we wait for your return. Lord, Lord, touch our hearts with the reality that our God reigns.
[26:12] Let's draw near to us in all that we do tonight. For your sake and glory we pray. [29:46] And he led them out as far as Bethany And lifting up his hands he blessed them While he blessed them he parted from them Was carried up into heaven And they worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem With great joy And were continually in the temple Blessing God May the Lord bless us now as we look at this Subject of the Ascension Luke's chapter 24 Can be easily broken up You'll see if you've got an ESV It's got subheadings The resurrection on the road to Emmaus And Jesus appearing to his disciples And then verse 50, 52 The Ascension
[30:47] We can also look at it from the perspective of the tomb The road The room And the mount So this evening we're going to be looking at the mount This Sunday evening Easter Sunday We've got a greeting this morning Happy Easter Some might be listening Some are here tonight And maybe in your hearts It's not that happy Trials And troubles Pains And anxiety But I'm praying tonight
[31:49] As we study God's word And as we hear God's word And we're reminded Of where God is Where Christ is High and lifted up That we can come to him Just as we are Shirley Vickers Wrote a poem Called The Black Hole A prayer for those going Through dark places Most of the Lord's people If not all of the Lord's people Just like their saviour Will experience One time or another Dark nights Of the soul Cries similar to what the Lord cried on a cross My God My God
[32:50] Why have you forsaken me? But that is only a feeling A certain feeling Because the promise of scripture is Your saviour Will never leave you Will never forsake you I may have repeated this often To those here be before A friend on the way A brother in the Lord Spoke to me And said Three words Kiki Three words for you And tell Peter I'm thankful That I was able to repeat
[33:50] Half one word for you Never Never Will I leave you Never Will I forsake you It's the promise Of our Lord Our God And saviour But that doesn't mean That these feelings Are like waves That you're afraid Are going to overwhelm you Oh God I'm right back In that limbo world again Can't feel you close to me Can't feel anything It seemed as if things were fine Walking in the light Then suddenly panic It's all dark I'm drowning Worries no more than they were before
[34:50] And yet they are now So heavy So insolvable So endless Sucking me down And I'm listening to the enemy Who is condemning me To death With his sly lies Doctors tell us That feeling Low Is just like any other illness Brought on by stress Hormones Exhaustion Dibility That's when Why do I feel so guilty about it Then why do I feel so guilty about it So powerless To drag myself out So unguarded Where is my knowledge Of you being there Right beside me Part of me While my feelings scream That because I'm like this I have failed you Therefore I am less than nothing Useless Rubbish Please give me the disciplined mind
[35:53] To refuse to entertain These trespassing thoughts Which have no right to be there Because I'm your child I wait quietly in faith Until my receiving equipment Is repaired And switched on again And I can feel you Filling me with your big heart Forgiving me Empowering me And remobilizing me That's what The truth Of Christ On the throne In glory Promising return Will do for us Oh we want to see Jesus When I wake In the morning When I wake In the morning When I wake

[37:49] On this Easter Sunday He turned to Peter He could have asked him So many questions But he just asked him one Do you love me?
[38:08] Do you love me Peter? Oh Peter rested on the knowledge That he had of Jesus He knew everything about him Oh he blushed When he said I know You know Because he understood He didn't love him As much As he ought to have But Jesus Is high And lifted up Remember these words Many of you have seen On YouTube It's Friday The world is in darkness The disciples have fled Jesus is dying Jesus is bleeding Jesus is crying Satan is laughing But that's Friday
[39:10] But that's Friday Sunday Is not just coming Sunday Has come 2000 years ago Not only was Jesus born Not only did Jesus Die Not only did Jesus Rise again He ascended And his work is not yet finished He's coming again He's got a work to do He wants to be with us He wants you To see his face And we will Because of the truth
[40:10] Of the ascension But this picture That we have Of the ascension Begins With the disciples Being totally confused They just Didn't Get it They didn't get The cross I'm not sure Even if the angels Got the cross Remember that Max Locado book Wonderful title And the angels Were silent Because they go This is the This is the one That the father loves More than anyone else In the world What's he doing He was dying For the ones And the twos
[41:10] He was dying For you And me But not just dying He was going To be raised And he's reigning For you So that tonight In the dark night Of your soul In your trials And your troubles Rest in the knowledge That your saviour Knows where you are Your saviour Has all authority Given to him All power Nothing can come Your way Without his permission He's promised That he'll work Everything together For your good Even the things You would never Choose For yourself So as we Look at the disciples We see them Initially They're not
[42:12] Filled with great joy John 14 In the upper Rome discourse And in John 16 They are the opposite They've been told I'm going to leave you And their hearts Were troubled Because for three years They were with them Constantly Heard them speak Saw them touch the blind men Commanded the sinner Follow me Forgave the sinner Fed the five thousand Walked on water And he's told them I'm going to leave you
[43:13] Marcus Lost an ear At the expense of Peter Not understanding That he didn't understand What he was telling them I've got to go for you And later he said You'll understand Why it's happening You'll understand And he did After the event So the horror of parting Is to turn to the joy Of parting Because in the ascension He leaves them And they go back Rejoicing He's left them And they celebrate Now If I was to tell you I'm leaving Well some of you Might rejoice right enough But if you went And had a party Oh Kiki's leaving I'd be gutted Because I thought You'd be sad So that's the natural reaction
[44:16] But here The one they love More than anyone else In the world Has left them But they go back And they rejoice It's because Of what they saw And what they heard And what is departing Means to us tonight And to them They've now Died But they died Believing in the promise That one day They would see him Our loved ones Died In the hope Of seeing him And they will It's promised And if he comes Tonight We too Will be taken up And you're going It's so hard To believe Kiki You've been watching

[46:20] At Christmas I remember Rico Tice Visiting his friend Who was Terminally ill Calming Rico down Because he was So upset He said Rico It's okay Jesus Has risen I've got a new line Now Jesus died For me And when we Look at this Wonderful Ascension The certainty Of it We put it Into the context Of this Luke's gospel First of the Certainty Of the resurrection And I loved Many things That I heard Today Somebody asked me Kiki What are your Points I said I've got Seven points They're very Like Anthony's But Anna
[47:21] Told me No you can't Use them But one thing I did pick up Many things But one in Particular Is the Beautiful Way That Jesus Dealt With the Two On the Road He was So Gentle With them So Encouraging There was no He understood Oh you Are so Slow To learn And that's What's wonderful Of the Gospels That's so Wonderful Of the Bible The Bible Doesn't Foot or Shoot The disciples And make Them Wiser And cleverer And brighter Than they are They're all Admitting it Look we Just didn't Get it But they Were getting It When he Ascended When he Was led Them out As far As Bethany He lifted His hands And he Blessed them
[48:21] While he Blessed them He parted From them And was Carried up Into heaven And they Worshipped him And returned To Jerusalem With great Joy I want to Remind you Of the Evidences Of the Resurrection Because you'll Need that In the Middle of Your storm Rest on It He has Risen Well we Have the History The historic Record of the Gospel writers Matthew Mark Luke And John All speak About it We've got The testimony Of the Angels Even the Lord's enemies Who guarded The graves Even And obviously The apostles And then we've Got the Appearances There's at Least Ten Different Times That Jesus
[49:22] Appeared Resurrected Remember Mary Magdalene The other Women that Came to the Grave Peter The two Disciples We were Listening to About today And the Eleven Without Thomas And then The eleven With Thomas Which is what Happens just Before This time Of the Mount In the Room Seven Disciples Who went Fishing Met him Eleven Disciples In Galilee Where Christ Had summoned Them to be In chapter 28 of Matthew Then in First Corinthians Paul records That there Were Five Hundred People Who saw him Five Hundred Can you Remember what Was happening Thirty years Ago Most of us Can't remember Thirty minutes Ago But we Can certainly Remember Thirty years Ago And if You've Met someone Who was Resurrected
[50:23] You'd Remember That These Five Hundred Some of Them as Paul was Writing Were still Alive and Testifying To it James Saw The risen Lord The apostles As we're Reading of Here in The ascension And then In that Most glorious Passage When the First Martyr Stephen Is being Stoned To death He's a He sees A window Up in Heaven And he Sees Christ Standing And because He sees Where his Lord Is At the Right Hand Of God He can He can Even Deal with Martyrdom That's where God is And he Almost Repeated His Lord's Prayer On the Cross Don't
[51:23] Lay this Father Forgive Them They Don't Know What They're Doing And then He died Death Was Just Like a Sleep Because It was A doorway Into His Presence Not Only Stephen Saw The Risen Lord Paul On the Road To Damascus Met With The Risen Lord And Then Became The Greatest Of All Apostles And Then We've Got John Who Saw That Vision On the Isle Of Patmos Wrote That Book That We Should All Be Reading Looking Forward To David's Preaching Servants On it Because That's Where We Can Find Where Jesus Is
[52:23] Now But The Difference With The Resurrection Appearances And The Importance Of The Ascension Appearances Is That It Happened Forty Days After The Resurrection Now You'll See As You Study Scripture Forty Can Be Of Some Significance But I'll Let You Look Into That On The Fortieth Day The End Of His Appearance Has Happened He Was Never To Appear Again He Was Taken Up Into Heaven And They Rejoiced Because They Understood What This Meant One Acces He Simply Vanished But
