[4:00] that you would increase his strength that you would heal him and that you would bring him back to this place again to be at worship with us others like him as well Lord that are in our minds eye we commit each one to you and ask that you would bless them and we pray this in Jesus name Amen Boys and girls do you want to come forward please?

[4:23] Amen How are you today?

[4:51] All doing fine today? Good Does anyone know what this is? I guess you know what this is I guess it was for you Does anyone else know what this is?

[5:09] One, two Do you know what it's called? Bethany you have tried one I guess you have tried two What do you call this?

[5:23] A thing for balancing on A thing for balancing on Yeah? That's a description of it You know what it's called next? It's called a balance board Yeah That's what it's called I always thought this was called a wobble board Because when I had to use this at one stage Not this one But another one In hospital They were calling it A wobble board So do you know what you do on a wobble board?

[5:53] Ammon says you wobble You wobble on a wobble board a bit If your legs are If you've maybe had an operation And your legs are not very strong And you're wanting to get them a bit stronger Then you need this thing to stand on And to try and be steady on Does anyone want to have a wee try?

[6:14] Go on Alistair then Take the stage Not on the table Arms off the table Let's get you a wee bit closer to the far of her Whoa Whoa One more time Whoa Okay thank you One or two more volunteers Go on Grace Show us your stuff There we go Well done You've done that before Anyone else want to have a wee try?

[7:14] Come on Oh you've got the heels on This is going to be difficult Paddler stand by You've just recovered We don't want you to come back How's that?

[7:31] Alright Good shot Good shot Good shot That's it Well done It's good to see Ian Davidson back today From his hip replacement Outcoming Just joking It's tricky The wobble board Isn't it?

[8:00] It's tricky Well I tell you the secret To the wobble board I don't know if I can still do it But I remember When I was in hospital And I was in Inverness And I was on one of these things With a physio And you had to go from Two legs To one leg I remember wobbling about one day And one of the physio said You're doing it wrong Use your head She said to me You're looking down And the more you look down The more you wobble She said Look straight ahead Fix your eyes straight ahead And that's how you stay steady You want to try it?

[8:37] One more John Rory See if you're looking down But wobbling Look straight ahead There we go Yeah you can do it afterwards Okay Yeah you can have a wee shot After the service Yeah But Why did I show you the wobble board And tell you that?

[9:08] I'll tell you why Sometimes Life can be a bit like The wobble board Sometimes life can be Very smooth And it can be going Quite steady And other times In our lives It can start to get A bit wobbly Sometimes Things happen to the people That we love They get sick And That makes us feel A bit wobbly Sometimes maybe Our friends that are in school They're not so nice to us anymore And you know That makes us feel A bit wobbly Sometimes when Bad things happen And we Just didn't see them coming It's like it makes us A bit wobbly Sometimes when good things happen They can make us A bit wobbly too Because they just Make us Forget What life's all about Do you know how to stay steady In life As a Christian We don't fix our eyes down We don't fix our eyes On ourselves

[10:09] Just like you have to look Straight ahead And fix your eyes on the point If you want to be steady On the wobbly board Who do we have to fix our eyes on If we want to be steady As Christians Shout out for God We fix our eyes on God We fix our eyes on Who's the one that we can Most clearly see God in The image of the invisible God Is what the Bible tells us Who do we look to If we want to see God Most clearly We look to Jesus Who do we look to Jesus Thank you Hebrews chapter 12 And verse 2 Says this Let us fix our eyes On Jesus Can you say that back for me Let Let us fix our eyes on Jesus Let us fix our eyes on Jesus Let Last time Okay let's pray

[11:14] Lord God we We thank you that you know our hearts We thank you that you know that sometimes In life we can feel a bit wobbly Sometimes things happen that Make us A bit Not sure what to think and do And Sometimes in life we can struggle But we thank you that You have told us In the Bible That we are to fix Our eyes Upon Jesus And so we pray that Whether Life is going very smooth Or whether life is a bit bumpy Just now Help us whether we are young Or whether we are old To fix Our eyes Upon Jesus And keep on Fixing our eyes Every day Upon Jesus And we pray This in Jesus name Amen We are going to sing now And we are going to sing From Mission Praise 755

[38:15] And, thank you.

[39:47] attack as he hung there for us and so that's the structure of the thoughts which i hope to progress to in the course of the time that we have first of all jesus is deserted in the suffering and he's not delivered that's what we see in the first half of this psalm look at verse one and verse two my god my god why have you forsaken me why are you so far from saving me so far from the words of my groaning oh my god i cry out by day but you do not answer by night and i'm not silent and as we think on this it's an awful testimony these are harrowing words it seems so bleak it's so hopeless and yes this is a psalm of david and yes david experienced something of this in his life but never to this degree yes david was often forsaken david often found himself in pits of trouble and he cried out to god and sometimes he had to wait a while for the answer sometimes he had to wait before that hope broke through and yet in this psalm as we consider the first part of it the answer doesn't come oh my god verse two i cry out by day but you do not answer here's just a little aside it's not my notes but it occurs to me how often do we hear that term oh my god how often do we hear it on tv on the radio in conversation in this place and it's not even registering sometimes in the minds of god's people think about that cry when we hear it the cry of christ on the cross oh my god i cry out by day but you do not answer the cry of desertion the psalm continues verse three and there is that profession that god is sovereign that he is the enthroned king yet you are enthroned as the holy one you are the praise of israel and you our fathers put their trust they trusted and you delivered and they cried out to you and were saved and you they trusted and were not disappointed and yet despite all that despite all these remembrances despite this profession of faith in god despite the fact that god is still god despite the deliverances of the past and the memories of yesteryear these testimonies of salvation that flash to the mind of the one who suffered there in this instance the one who is suffering he continues to suffer and he experiences a a desertion and an isolation and a forsakenness unlike anything else you read and the fact is this does not marry up with the life of david and i'll see you more about this in a moment this is a psalm that points us beyond this is a psalm that propels us down the line of david until our focus

[43:48] rests and fixes on christ this is a portrait of calvary this is jesus sharing something of his experience with us my god my god my god why have you forsaken me these are jesus words mark 15 matthew 27 why are you so far from saving me that was jesus experience as the son in some mysterious way is estranged from the father and the spirit in the work of the atonement the groanings of desertion that we read here they're christ's groanings the unanswered cries they were jesus cries and all this that we read of we we see and we hear on the cross and so the thoughts and the experiences of psalm 22 are a commentary to the cross in psalm 22 we are enabled to see something of what jesus went through behind these four words and they crucified her and you know he did it for us let's not forget that he did it for us what caused the desertion what would cause the father to turn his face away from the son what would cause this thrushing silence what would cause this isolation nothing other than my sin and yours it was our sin that drove that wedge between the father and the son it was our sin and the atoning of it that caused jesus to be deserted and not delivered he was deserted in order that we could be delivered a god of justice cannot leave sin unpunished and yet a god of love does not desire to see the sinner perish and so what did this god of love do he took the punishment for us he was deserted because of my sin and i can be delivered because of his sacrifice and so we see first of all there in christ's sufferings that he was deserted secondly we see that he was despised and this these verses very much connect with isaiah 53 and verse 3 in fact the whole chapter we could have read it but there's no time just now but here's one verse from isaiah 53 in verse 3 he was despised and rejected by men a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised and we esteemed him not and that's another foreshadowing of what was to come on the cross and so as we look at verse 6 and onwards here we see a similar structure to what's come previous there's another harrowing testimony from verse 6 and onwards

[47:48] another harrowing testimony from the suffering sermon verse 6 verse 6 was one who was often subjected to scorn and mocking and insults and sarcasm but never to this degree the psalmist is pointing us forward to one who suffered at a death that the psalmist couldn't taste the psalmist is pointing us forward to one who was demeaned and humiliated and left without a trace of dignity in verse 9 to 11 again we have this cry this quest for comfort a cry for help in the face of such an intense acute attack verse 9 and yet you brought me out of the womb you made me trust in you even at my mother's breast from birth

[49:24] I was cast upon you from my mother's womb you have been my God do not be far from me for trouble is near and there is no one to help and yet at the end of verse 11 still there is no help before and again this is not the experience of David he was scorned he was attacked but as he cried out to the Lord for help and we have got so many Psalms that are testimony to that as David tried out for help the Lord answered and help was given the Lord did not remain far from David the Lord was his helper Psalm 46 close at hand in times of distress one commentator wearsby says according to the record the Lord never deserted

[50:28] David and was out of need but always provided friends to help him and deliverance from his enemies and yet in this time the one who is in distress is finding no comfort it seems necessary that the one who was suffering would be despised it seems necessary that he would not be delivered from the curse of sin it seems necessary that he would have to endure the pain and the distress it seems necessary that he would have to become like a worm Lord and the angels even lower than mine why and who do we see here we see Jesus one thousand years before he hung and suffered there we see we hear

[51:49] Jesus we see the man of sorrows we see what the hymn writer wrote when he said bearing shame and scoffing rude in my place condemned he stood sealed my pardon with his blood hallelujah what the saviour can you see it can you see the cross here in psalm 22 if not listen listen with me for a moment to Matthew 27 keep psalm 22 open flick through these verses that we've been reading from verse 6 and onwards and then listen as I read something of the account of the crucifixion in Matthew 27 verse 39 those who passed by hurled insults at him shaking their heads and saying you who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days save yourself come down from the cross if you're the son of God in the same way the chief priests the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him he saved others they said but he can't save himself he's the king of Israel let him come down from the cross and we will believe in him he trusts in

[53:23] God let God rescue him now if he wants him but he said I am the son of God in the same way the robbers who were crucified with him also keep insults on him despised can you see the cross in Psalm 22 if you can't it's because you don't want to it is undeniable and can you see that it was all for you and it was for me if you can see it trust him believe in him and accept the salvation that he offers and he bought with such a high price and let say a word to those who are believers let us come back day by day by day by day to the cross and let us remember believers that he was deserted and he was despised and he went to the cross knowing the experience of it he did it for us let that spur us on let that shake us out of any lukewarmness that might be creeping into our souls let that fire us with evangelistic zeal let that bring us back to repentance when we're veering into the sin that we so often take so lightly remember the cost of it let this cause us to persevere in walking with and being obedient to and speaking out about

[55:36] Jesus I said it to the children let's take it for ourselves let us fix our eyes on Jesus Hebrews 12 the author and perfecter of our faith who for the joy set before him endured the cross scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of God consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men so that you will not grow weary and lose heart so we see the desertion and we see how he was despised and finally and just very briefly we see a diabolical attack that he endured verse 12 many bulls surround me strong bulls with bashing encircle me roaring lions tearing their prey open their mouths wide against me

[56:42] I am poured out like water and all my bones are out of joint my heart has turned to wax it has melted away within me my strength has dried up like a pot share a bit of old clay and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth you ray me in the dust of death dogs have surrounded me a band of evil men has encircled me they have pierced my hands and my feet I can count all my bones people stare and gloat over me they divide my garments among them and cast lots from my clothing and we need to leave it there today but the ferocity of the language is disturbing and the imagery without being able to go into it is nothing short of satanic diabolical and in these verses what we have so clearly is the physical crucifixion foretold a thousand years before it was even done in israel no one was crucified in israel until the romans came along and so what david was writing of he couldn't know he couldn't have experienced he couldn't have eyewitness it was beyond him and yet we have the crucifixion we give to you just the substance of one quote from the scoffield reference by the writer says psalm 22 is a graphic picture of death by crucifixion the bones of the hands arms and shoulders and pelvis out of joint we see that in verse 14 of psalm 22 the profuse perspiration caused by intense suffering again verse 14 the action of the heart is affected verse 14 strength exhausted extreme thirst verse 15 the hands and feet are pierced verse 16 partial nudity with hurt to modesty verse 17 all these things writes the writer are incidental to that mode of death crucifixion and only that mode of death and the accompanying circumstances are precisely those fulfilled in the crucifixion of christ the desolation trial of verse 1 of psalm 22 we have it to the very letter in matthew 27 46 the periods of light and darkness of verse 2 of psalm 22 we see them in matthew 27 and verse 45 the casting of lots the the insults the derision all these were literally fulfilled and let me see a word just then goes into the skeptics if you ever needed proof that the bible is god's supernatural word you have it here psalm 22 1000 years before the cross takes us into the precise details and horror of crucifixion before it could ever be known about and the suffering that Jesus endured was not just cruel man and world systems and governments united against

[60:32] Jesus behind all of this there was that diabolical plan satan himself and in all of this all of hell was being unleashed upon our savior so the hell need not be our experience and they crucified him wrote Mark but in psalm 22 we are taken behind the scenes of life we are taken in some measure that we can bear into the sufferings of Christ on the cross where he died the question I want to finish with is a question I will send and it's this one died he for me who caused this pain for me who him to death pursued we want to be able to answer yes and we can answer yes how simply by believing in Jesus simply by trusting in this costly finished work that we see in the sun simply by praying for you are sitting in your chair this night by praying thank you

[62:33] Jesus for dying to be my savior now with your strength Lord Jesus I will follow you as my Lord if you in your chair can put your amen to that before you walk out that door you can be assured because of all that Jesus suffered your sins will be forgiven you will not perish but you will receive and you will never lose eternal life we pray our heavenly father we pray that as we go from here we would go from here with the words of that psalm in our minds and we pray that by your spirit you would do what no man can do and you would apply it to each one of our hearts psalm here still do not yet know you as saviour and lord and we pray that even in the silence of these moments we pray that they would bow before

[64:19] Jesus and accept his salvation and confess that they will follow him as lord some of us lord have been following for a while and perhaps we are weak lord and perhaps we are wayward perhaps our hearts are cool and we have no zeal and we have no enthusiasm lord if there are any here we are in that state that state that we found jonah in that state that we can often find ourselves in we pray that as we think upon what jesus suffered for us we pray that we would be fired up again with that love for the saviour who first loved us speak we pray to each one of us correct encourage rebuke and unite every one of us we pray in the salvation that was procured for us on Calvary's hill and we pray these things in jesus our saviour's name amen we sing the words of mission phase 33 the question that we consider to finish we sing to finish and can it be that i should gain an interest in the saviour's blood died he for me who caused his pain for me to him to death pursued amazing love how can it be that thou my god should stand for me let's respond to the author of the gospel in the words of this hand and may the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god the father and the fellowship of god the holy spirit be with us all both now and forever more amen
