[0:00] Good evening. Happy New Year for some of you that I haven't seen. And it's good to see everyone here this morning. Good to see at least one or two visitors with us as well.

[0:13] And you are warmly welcome to the service. And if you're able to stay at the end, then please do so. I'm just seeing this contraption across the roof.

[0:25] Just wondering if somebody's going to zip right across here in the course of the ceremony. But those who are here are warmly welcome to stay behind for tea and coffee and fellowship.

[0:38] We've been able to at the end of the service. The evening service tonight will be at 6pm normal time. And that will be conducted by Mr Ian Morrison who's hiding at the back row there.

[0:49] So it's good to see you Ian. And we look forward to hearing God speak to you this evening. Youth fellowship resumes and meets at half past seven tonight. And in the course of the week as usual, ladies' Bible study at 8 on Monday.

[1:02] Tuesday has a road to recovery at 8 in the soft play. And the prayer meeting is at half past seven on Wednesday evening here. The service is next Sunday at 11 and 6, both taken God willing by myself.

[1:17] And a couple more intimations. One is regarding the volunteers for the Sunday school. With the growing number of children in our congregation, it would be helpful to have three volunteers who are happy to occasionally be called on to help at CRECH or Sunday school.

[1:36] No regular commitment involved. But if you're able to help on that kind of ad hoc basis, please speak to either Mary or Lucy Ture. 27th of January will be the first of the Thursday nights that we will meet to explore Christianity.

[1:55] Christianity Explores, of course, that we've been going through over quite a few years now. And it resumes or it begins on Thursday, 27th of January, seven weeks.

[2:06] And it's open to all who might wish to learn more about the Christian faith. It may be those who know very little and who are occasionally in church or maybe never in church.

[2:18] And you can extend an invitation to them. Or it could be someone who's been a Christian for a long time and wants just to think more about the basics of what it means to be a Christian.

[2:30] There's a whole range of ages and there's a whole range of stages in the Christian life. And I think everyone, I certainly get something new every time I go through this course.

[2:42] So I would recommend it to you. One more information is just to say that we are getting to a really critical point with the church building.

[2:53] We want to accelerate that towards the completion. And if you have any spare time over the next eight weeks in particular, then please make your way down to the church building.

[3:07] There's work to do outside and there's work to do inside. So anytime, just go down and there will be someone who will be able to give you some instructions on how you can help.

[3:19] So please, if you're able to spare the time, that would be much appreciated. These, I think, are all the intimations. So let's begin this time of worship.

[3:32] Let's worship God as we sing to his praise from Psalm 14, the first five verses of Psalm 40. I waited for the Lord my God and patiently did bear.

[3:43] At length to me he did incline my voice and cry to hear. Down to the end of verse five. And we stand to sing God's praise. Let's unite our hearts and fear.

[4:01] Let's pray together. Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for this, your day, and we thank you for your word, which we have begun this time of worship singing.

[4:17] We thank you for the psalms, for this book that has been given to us with songs of praise and with prayers that we go looking for.

[4:30] Prayers that touch our hearts and prayers that we have on our lips as we Bible for you. We thank you for the psalmist. We thank you, Lord, for the testimony of the psalmist.

[4:44] We thank you that as we listen to his testimony, we see more of who you are. You are the God who saves. And you are the God who saves all who wait upon you, all who put their hope in you, all who trust in you.

[5:01] I waited for the Lord, my God, and patiently did bear. At length to me, he didn't climb my voice and cry to hear. He took me from the fearful pit and from the mighty clay and on a rock.

[5:17] He set my feet, establishing my way. Lord God, we thank you for such a succinct expression of what you have done and what you are doing in the lives of all your people.

[5:31] We are sinners. We live in a world where we are all too conscious of sin. And often we find ourselves sinking. Often we find ourselves entangled and struggling.

[5:45] But we thank you that as we cry out to you, you are the one who reaches down and lifts us up. And sets our feet upon the rock. And the rock of our salvation is Christ Jesus.

[5:59] And we thank you for Jesus. We thank you that this is the Lord's day. This is the day where we remember that not only did Jesus live and die for us, but he rose from the dead.

[6:12] And in doing so, declared that all who are trusting in him are forgiven their sin. We thank you that all who are trusting in Christ are given the assurance that death no longer has a hold on us.

[6:25] That Satan has been defeated. That Satan has been defeated. And that the resurrection life that Christ demonstrated is our gift as we come in faith to him.

[6:36] We ask, Lord, that that would be the testimony of each one who is here, from the youngest to the oldest. That we would be able to say that the Lord Jesus is the rock of our salvation.

[6:49] That we are trusting in him. That we are building our lives upon him. And we pray, Lord, that we would truly have a new song in our mouth. Today and every day that you give us, may we be heard saying and showing out in the way that we live.

[7:06] That this is the day that the Lord has made. And we will rejoice and be glad in it. We pray that we would know daily the joy of your salvation of us. We pray that we would know that peace that comes from God.

[7:20] We pray, Lord, that we would have that poise. That stability, that balance that comes from trusting in Jesus. And leaning not upon our own understanding.

[7:32] And we ask, Lord, that that would be seen as people look at their lives. That not only, Lord, as you look at our hearts, would you be pleased. But we pray that others would see in our lives that we are those who are trusting in Jesus.

[7:46] To help us, Lord, we pray in this day. Bless this hour of worship. Help us, Lord, in this new year. We look around us, even in this building.

[7:59] And we are conscious of some who sat with us so often in years gone by. And who are no longer with us going into this year. But we thank you, Lord, for the hope that we are given in Christ that goes beyond the grave.

[8:14] And, Lord, we are conscious of others who are sitting with us now who were not with us in days gone by. For the young ones and for those that we have renewed fellowship with.

[8:26] We thank you, Lord, that we can ask that you will bless each one. And, Lord, we pray for new life. We pray for those who were born into this community.

[8:40] Even in the last few days, we think of Stephen and Heather and their family. The two wee girls born in the past few days. And we pray your blessing upon them as a family.

[8:52] We pray your blessing upon these girls as they grow up. That they would grow up to know you and to trust you. We pray, Lord, on for those who are struggling.

[9:02] We think of those in hospital. Especially we think of Ian Davidson and Shona by his side. And we ask, Lord, that you would uphold them. That you would strengthen them.

[9:13] We pray for those who are at home and who are struggling. And we ask that your hand is upon them. We can think of a number of them. And we commit them to you, Lord. And ask that you would bless them.

[9:25] We pray for those who are away on holiday. For those who are away with family commitments and work commitments. And we ask that you would be with each one.

[9:36] And, Lord, that you would bless them. And that they would be salt and light in a world that needs to see and taste that the Lord is good. So, Lord, we pray for each one.

[9:49] For those present. For those absent. We pray for the fellowships around us. And this village. And this island. Across the islands. And across the nations.

[10:01] And we ask, Lord, that whatever Christ crucified is preached. That you would add your blessing. And that you would build your church. So, hear our prayers. Take away our sin.

[10:12] And help us to look to Jesus. For we pray these things in his name. And for his sake. Heavenly Father, we thank you for. We thank you for the good news of the gospel.

[10:23] We thank you that when we were stuck in sin. Jesus came into this world. That was planned. To save us from our sin. We thank you that he went to a cross.

[10:33] And he suffered. And he died. And his blood takes away all of our sin. And we pray that each one of us would ask him. To take away our sin. Each one of us would be able to know that we are Christians.

[10:46] We thank you that it's all of grace. It's not what we earn. But it's a gift of God. And Lord, we pray that each one of us would receive it. And Lord, as we think back.

[10:58] We do remember Adiba. And we thank you for her. And we thank you for her memory. We thank you for the times that she sat here with us. We thank you for our family. And the gift that they have given us.

[11:10] And we pray that you would bless them. And that you would be near to them. We ask now, Lord, that you would continue with us. And Lord, that you would be near to the boys and girls at Sunday school.

[11:23] And help them to have a good time. To enjoy these gifts. And help them, we pray, to taste and see. And to enjoy the Lord. And to come to know that you are good. So hear our prayers.

[11:34] And take away our sin. For we pray it in Jesus' name. And for Jesus' sake. Amen. We're going to sing now. And the words are not in a book. But they will be on the screen. Just a minute.

[11:44] What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. We'll stand to sing. If we could turn, please, to John chapter 18.

[12:00] John chapter 18. John chapter 18.

[12:32] When he had finished praying. Jesus left with his disciples. And crossed the Kedron Valley. On the other side, there was an olive grove. And he and his disciples went into it.

[12:43] Now Judas who betrayed him knew the place. Because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. So Judas came to the grove. Guiding an attachment of soldiers.

[12:54] And some officials. From the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. Jesus knowing all that was going to happen to him.

[13:04] Went out and asked him. Who is it that you want? Jesus of Nazareth, they replied. I am he, Jesus said. And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.

[13:17] When Jesus said, I am he. They drew back and fell to the ground. Again he asked them. Who is it that you want? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

[13:28] I told you that I am he. Jesus answered. If you are looking for me. Then let these men go. This happens so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled. I have not lost one of those you gave me.

[13:41] Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it. And struck the high priest's servant. Cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malthus.

[13:53] Jesus commanded Peter. Put your sword away. Shall I not drink the cup the father has given me? Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander.

[14:04] And the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him. And brought him first to Annas. Who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas. The high priest that year. Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews.

[14:16] That it would be good. If one man died for the people. Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because his disciple was known to the high priest.

[14:28] He went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard. But Peter had to wait outside of the door. The other disciple who was known to the high priest. He came back.

[14:39] Spoke to the girl on duty there. And brought Peter in. You are not one of his disciples are you? The girl at the door asked Peter. He replied I am not.

[14:52] It was cold. And the servants and officials stood round the fire. They had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them. Warming himself. Meanwhile the high priest questioned Jesus.

[15:05] About his disciples and his teaching. I have spoken openly to the world. Jesus replied. I always taught in synagogues or at the temple. Where all the Jews come together.

[15:16] I said nothing in secret. Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know that. What I said. When Jesus said this.

[15:27] One of the officials nearby. Struck him in the face. Is this the way you answer the high priest? He demanded. If I have said something wrong.

[15:37] Jesus replied. Testify. As to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth. Why did you strike me? Then Annas sent him. Still bound to Caiaphas.

[15:48] The high priest. As Simon Peter stood warming himself. He was asked. You are not one of his disciples are you? He denied it.

[15:58] Saying I am not. One of the high priest's servants. A relative of the man. Whose ear Peter had cut off. Challenged him. Didn't I see you with him.

[16:08] In the olive grove. Again. Peter denied it. And at that moment. A cock. Began to grow. A crow. Amen. And may God.

[16:19] Lest that reading. Of his word to us. We sing again. To God's praise. Again in Psalm 40. And at the end of the Sunday. Verses 16 and 17.

[16:30] In Galilee. In thee. Let all be glad and joy. Who seekingly abide. For thy salvation. Love. Say still. The Lord. Be magnified. And poor and needy. Yet the Lord of me.

[16:41] A care doth take. Thou art my help. And saviour. My God. No tarion. Make. These two verses. And gather to God's praise. If you can turn back.

[16:57] Please to John. Chapter 18. And as we go there.

[17:09] Let's pray. A short prayer from. Psalm 19. Lord God. Lord God. We pray that the words. Of. My mouth. And the meditations. Of our hearts.

[17:19] Would be pleasing. In your sight. O Lord. Our rock. And our redeemer. Amen. John chapter 18.

[17:30] is where we resume. Our studies this morning. Having come through the Christmas. And the New Year period.

[17:42] And I'd like to focus today. On the first 11 verses. More than the latter section. And we'll move. A bit more slowly.

[17:53] Through. These next few chapters. As we. Come to. To the. The passion. Of Christ. Just as a. A word of introduction.

[18:05] We're all. Very well aware. This is. It's a new year. This is the. The second Lord's Day. Is it? No. This is the first. Lord's Day. First Sunday. Of a new year.

[18:18] And. A new year. Is a time. When we. We think about our lives. And we think about the things. That fill our lives. And. It's a time. Where we often resolve. To break some bad habits.

[18:30] And it's a time. Often. That we resolve. As well. To. To make some good habits. Not all habits. Are bad. There are good habits. That we can. Nurture.

[18:42] And I want to. Begin. As we come to these verses. By asking the question. Did Jesus have any habits? And the answer.

[18:52] To that question. Is yes. He didn't have bad habits. But he had good habits. And one that we see here.

[19:06] As we move from 17. Into chapter 18. Is prayer. Prayer. So the first point today. I think the points are probably on the screen. First point is.

[19:17] The practice. The practice. Of Christ here. And it's the practice. Of prayer. Now. I know it's been a few weeks. Since we were. In John's gospel.

[19:28] And. If we just flip back. To John chapter 17. We see that. 17. Is a chapter. That is. Immersed in prayer. 17. Is a chapter. Where we have the.

[19:39] The record. Where we're allowed. To enter into. And listen in. To the prayer. Of. Jesus. And it's a prayer. For believers. Both back then.

[19:49] In his day. And throughout. All the ages. Jesus. So in John 17. We. Find Jesus. In the. In the. Posture of prayer. And now.

[20:00] As we move from. John 17. And we. Go into John chapter 18. What do we find him doing? We find him in prayer. This begins with prayer.

[20:13] This continues. Into prayer. We find him in the practice. Of prayer. Some people. We just know.

[20:25] We know. If we bump into them. You know. On holiday. For example. We know how we'll find them. Some people. That we bump into. On holiday. You just know. They'll be shopping. You bump into.

[20:36] John Struthers. On holiday. Whichever part of the land. You bump into him. You'll be at the side of a river. Castor. You bump into. Duncan. On holiday. You'll find him at. Three thousand feet.

[20:47] Or so. Scampering up. Some mountain. Certain practices. That we. We just come to know people. For the practices. That they're so often engaged in. And everyone knew.

[20:59] That Jesus. Was so often. Found. In prayer. It was his practice. It was his habit. To pray. So in verse one.

[21:11] We find Jesus. Finishing. Praying. And when he had. Finished. Praying. What does he do. When he. He finishes. Praying. Well. He takes his. Disciple. And he takes his.

[21:21] Disciples. To a garden. To an olive grove. As it's translated. In the NIV. And that was a place. That he often. Took the disciples. So that they could be. With him.

[21:32] And so that they. And he. Together. Could be. In prayer. Judas. Iscariot. At this point. Is no longer.

[21:43] With. The other. Eleven. Disciples. Judas. Was engineering. The arrest. Of Jesus. Judas. Was. Gathering. A crowd. With. All the necessary.

[21:54] Paperwork. And all the. Staff. In order to be able. To. Take custody. Of Jesus. But how did. Judas. Know. Having been.

[22:05] Away. From the. Disciples. Since. John. Chapter. Thirteen. How did. Judas. Know. Where. To find. Jesus. How did.

[22:17] Judas. Know. What. Jesus. Would. Be. Doing. How did. Jesus. Judas. Know. How to. Intercept. Christ. Well. For. Judas. It. Wasn't.

[22:27] Hard. To. Figure. He. Knew. He. Would. Be. In. Prayer. It. Says. In. Verse. Two. Judas. Knew. The. Place. Judas.

[22:39] Iscariot. Knew. The. Place. That. He. Would. Find. Jesus. One. Of. The. Commitators. Busa. I. Think. It's. Pronounced. Says. Our.

[22:49] Lord's. Habits. Of. Prayer. Were. As. Well. Known. As. That. Of. Daniel. Where. Daniel. When. His. Enemies.

[22:59] Came. Looking. For. Him. Then. You. Were. To. Find. Him. Three. Times. A. Day. Same. Place. Same. Posture. In. Prayer. He.

[23:11] Was. Known. For. The. Practice. The. Hava. Of. Prayer. Here's. A. Question. As. We. Apply. It. To. Our. We. We. We. Where.

[23:23] We. People. Go. Looking. For. You. And. For. Me. What. Is. It. That. We. Known. For. What.

[23:34] Practice. Are. We. So. Often. Engaged. In. What. Habits. Are. Noticeable. And. Form. A. Large. Part. Of.

[23:45] Our. Lives. Here. At. The. Beginning. Of. A. New. Year. Let's. You. And. I. Be. Encouraged.

[23:56] To. Make. The. Habit. To. Nurture. The. Habit. Of. Prayer. To. Often. Engage. In. The. Practice. The. Discipline.

[24:07] Of. Prayer. I. Read. An. Article. This. Morning. By. By. John. Piper. And. The. First. Sentence. In.

[24:17] The. Article. Was. This. If. You. Struggle. In. Prayer. You. You. A. Normal. Christian. And.

[24:28] He. Went. On. To. Expound. The. Fact. That. Prayer. Is. A. Practice. It's. A. Discipline. It's. Something. That. There's. Great. Joy. In. It's. Something. That. We. Have. To. Work. At. You.

[24:40] Struggle. In. Prayer. You. Are. A. Normal. Christian. Martin. Ruther. Perhaps.

[24:51] You're. Not. A. Christian. Martin. Luther. Says. To. Be. A. Christian. Without. Prayer. Is. No. More. Possible. Than. To. Be. Alive. Without. Breathing. To.

[25:01] Be. A. Christian. Without. Prayer. Is. No. More. Possible. Than. To. Be. Alive. Without. Breathing. So. That's. The. First. Point. The. Practice. Of.

[25:12] Prayer. The. Second. Point. Is. The. Place. As we. Come. To. John. Eighteen. We. We. Look. At. The. The. The. The. Precise. Position. The. Place. That. Jesus. Takes.

[25:22] His. Disciples. And. Again. We're. In. Verse. One. Here. Jesus. Left. With. His. Disciples. And. Crossed. The. Kidron. Valley. On. The. Other. Side. There. Was. An. Olive. Grove. And. He. And. His. Disciples. Went.

[25:33] Into. It. Or. As. The. Authorized. Version. Says. He. Went. Out. With. His. Disciples. Over. The. Brook. Kidron. Where. Was. A. Garden. Into. Which. He. Entered.

[25:43] And. His. Disciples. And. I. Don't. Want. To. Say. Too. Much. About. This. This. Is. Just. A. Short. Point. I. Just. Want. Us.

[26:02] He. Took. Them. To. That. Place. Which. Was. Away. From. The. Crowds. And. The. The. The. Town. At. This. Time. Would. Have. Been. Absolutely. Mobbed. With.

[26:12] Crowds. Jesus. Takes. His. Disciples. Away. From. The. Crowds. He. Takes. Them. To. This. Garden. Which. We. Know. As. The. Garden. Of. Of. Gethsemane.

[26:23] He. Takes. Them. Gethsemane. He.

[26:34] Calls. His. Disciples. To. Play. With. Gethsemane. The. Place. Was. The. Garden. And.

[26:46] I. Want. Ask. The. Question. That. Location. Do. We. Have. A. Garden. Do. We. Have. A. Particular. Place. That. We. Often.

[26:56] Go. To. To. Pray. Jesus. In. Matthew. Six. He. Talks. About. Going. Into. Your. Closet. Or. This. Room. And. Closing. The. Door. And.

[27:07] Pray. Do. You. Have. A. Garden. Do. You. Have. A. Do. You. Have. A. Room. Doesn't. Literally. Need. To. Be. A. Room. Or. A. Garden.

[27:17] Could. Be. A. Car. Could. Be. A. Boat. Could. Be. A. Hill. Could. Be. An. Old. Shed. We.

[27:29] Used. For. The. Prayer. Meeting. On. The. Wednesday. Evening. And. I. Understand. That. In. Years. Gone. By. There. Were. Christians. Who. Just. In. Their. Tea. Break. Went.

[27:40] To. That. Little. Shed. As. It. Was. And. Pray. It. Would. Be. A. Profitable.

[27:51] New. Year's. Resolution. For. You. And. I. To. Find. A. Garden. To. Find. A. Place. A. Particular. Place. Where. We. Can.

[28:02] Often. Be. Find. In. Prayer. A. Place. Where. We. Are. Often. In. Fellowship. With. Christ. I. Read. Another.

[28:13] Article. In. The. Course. Of. This. Week. And. It. Was. An. Account. Of. The. Life. Of. Susanna. Wesley. She.

[28:24] Was. The. Mother. Of. John. Wesley. And. Charles. Wesley. Whose. Hymns. That. We. Say. She. Was. A. Mother. Who. Had. I. Think. It. Was. Nineteen. Children. And.

[28:36] She. Brought. Up. These. Nineteen. Children. And. It. Says. Here. That. Susanna. Wesley. With. Her. Children. Used. To. Pull. Her. Apron. Over. Her.

[28:46] Head. In. The. Kitchen. And. All. The. Children. Had. Learned. That. This. May.

[28:58] Not. Be. Interrupted. The. Application. Here. Is. Find. The. Place. Plan. The. Time. Teach. The. Children. Challenging. Maybe.

[29:12] In. The. Busyness. Of. That. Stage. In. Life. If. You. Have. Children. Around. Your. Heels. Constantly. That. You. Need. To. Find. A. Posture. Within. A. Busy. Place. Where.

[29:24] The. Children. Know. You. In. Prayer. We. Have. A. Garden. And. As. A. Connegation. As.

[29:35] We. Apply. This. Let's. Not. Overlook. The. Garden. Of. Wednesday. Evening. Let's. Not. Overlook. The. Garden.

[29:45] Of. The. Prayer. Meeting. That's. An. Hour. Where. We. Particularly. Specifically. Intentionally. Unite. To. Pray. And.

[29:56] If. Jesus. And. His. Disciples. Needed. Often. To. Be. In. That. Place. Of. Corporate. Prayer. You. And. I. Certainly. Often. To. Be. In. That. Place.

[30:07] Of. Corporate. Prayer. Rissolve. This. Year. Make. It. A. Priority. The. Place. Was. The. Garden. The.

[30:17] Practice. Was. Prayer. One. Passing. Observation. Just. As. We. Move. Out. Of. This. Point. It's. Just. Note. The. Significance. Of. The. Garden.

[30:29] Where. Did. Adam. And. Eve. Fall. Genesis. Three. They. Fell. In. The. Garden. That. That's. Where. Everything. Started. To. Unravel. That's. Where. Sin.

[30:39] Came. In. It's. In. The. Garden. And. Now. As. You. See. Jesus. As. The. Passion. Of. Christ. Begins.

[30:50] In. Earnest. As. The. Work. Of. Lifting. Up. Those. Who. Had. Fallen. So. Far. As. It. Commences. It. Commences. In. The. Garden.

[31:00] Augustine. Says. It. Was. Fitting. That. The. Blood. Of. The. Physician. Remember. When. Jesus. Prayed. In. Gethsemane.

[31:21] Of. The. Sick. Man. First. Commence. The. Garden. The. The. Practice. Of. Prayer. The. Place. Was. The. Garden. The. Third.

[31:31] Point. Here. Is. The. Passion. And. I. Want. To. Take. Just. A. Few. Minutes. To. Explore. Or. To. Begin. To. Explore. The. Passion.

[31:42] Of. Christ. What. Is. It. That. Happened. In. The. Garden. There. Is. Three. Things. That. We. Can. Note. From. These. Verses. In. Particular. We. See. Jesus. Betrayed. By.

[31:52] Judas. We. See. Jesus. Rejected. By. His. Own. People. And. We. See. Jesus. Denied. By.

[32:03] His. Close. Friend. Let's. Consider.

[32:16] The. Fact. That. Jesus. Was. And. Is. Fully. God. But.

[32:27] He. Also. Was. And. Is. Fully. Man. Denied. By. His.

[32:37] Close. Friend. Rejected. By. His. People. Betrayed. By. His. Disciple. Utterly. Humiliated. And.

[32:50] He. Felt. It. All. Sometimes. We. Overlook. The. Fact. That. Jesus. Feels. Things. As. We. Feel. Things. To.

[33:03] Be. That. Abandoned. To. Be. That. Humiliated. To. Be. That. Hurt. Is. Impossible. For. Us. To. To. To. To. Grasp.

[33:13] And. Yet. He. Was. So. When. You. Are. Abandoned. And. When. You. Are. Hurt. And. When. You. Are. Humiliated. And.

[33:24] When. No. One. Else. Understands. What. You. Are. Going. Through. Christ. Does. So. Come. To. Him. Often.

[33:35] In. Prayer. Let's. Think. About. The. Passion. Of. Christ. In. This. Garden. He. Was. Betrayed. By. Judas. Verse. Two. Now. Judas.

[33:46] Who. Betrayed. Him. Knew. The. Place. Because. Jesus. Had. Often. Met. There. With. His. Disciples. So. Judas. Came. To. The. Grove. He. Came. To. The. Garden. Disciples.

[33:59] And. Jesus. Came. To. That. Place. To. He. Had. Often. Been. With. Jesus. And. He. Came.

[34:09] With. A. Heart. That. Was. Hard. A. Stone. To. Do. Everything. That. Was. In. His. Mind. To. Do. For. Sometimes. Judas. Had. Been. Plotting.

[34:21] He. Had. Been. Falling. Into. Sin. His. Hand. Had. Been. In. The. Money. Back. And. He. Been. Falling. Further. And. Further. Them. To. Sin. Every. Advance. Of. Jesus. During. These. Months.

[34:31] He. Rebutted. Every. Plea. That. Jesus. Made. To. Him. He. Dismissed. Every. Call. To. To. Believe. And. Repent.

[34:42] He. Rejected. And. Now. The. Hour. Had. Come. And. Judas. Was. Intent. And. He. Went. Ahead.

[34:52] In. Betraying. Jesus. The. Prophecy. Of. Psalm. 41. Verse. 9. Even. My. Close. Friend. Who. My. Trusted. He. Who. Shared. My. Bread. Think. Back. To. John. 13. The.

[35:02] Sock. Handed. To. Judas. The. Bread. Handed. To. Judas. Even. He. Who. Shared. My. Bread. Has. Lifted. His. Shield. Against. Me.

[35:14] What. Was. Prophecy. In. Psalm. 41. We. See. In. High. Definition. The.

[35:26] Hardness. Of. His. Heart. And. There's. A. Warning. Here. For. Us. We.

[35:36] Can. Come. Very. Close. To. Jesus. We. Can. Know. A. Lot. About. Jesus. But. If. We. Don't. Trust. Him. When.

[35:47] He. Calls. Us. To. If. We. Refuse. To. Yield. To. Him. If. We. Refuse. To. Confess. Our. Sin. And.

[35:59] Refuse. To. Put. Our. Faith. In. Him. When. We. Hear. His. Call. We're. Playing. With. Fire. No. We're. Playing. With. Hellfire.

[36:13] J.C. Ryle. Says. This. Was. A. Man. Who. For. Three. Years. Had. Been. A. Constant. Companion. Of. Christ. Had. Seen. His. Miracles. Had.

[36:24] Heard. His. Sermons. Had. Enjoyed. The. Benefit. Of. His. Private. Instruction. Had. Professed. Himself. A. Believer. Had. Even. Worked. And. Preached. In. Christ's. Name. Then.

[36:36] He. Goes. On. To. Say. Privileges. Misused. Seem. To. Paralyse. The. Conscience. The. Same. Fire. That. Melts. Wax. Will. Harden. Clay. How.

[36:51] Is. Your. Heart. This. Morning. Is. Your. Heart. Softening. And. Melting. Under. The. Hearing.

[37:01] Of. The. Gospel. Like. Wax. Or. Is. It. Harden. Like. Clay. Alistair.

[37:13] Begg. Remarks. That. To. Sit. In. These. Seats. Sunday. By. Sunday. And. To. Have. Ears. To. Hear. And.

[37:23] To. Hear. The. Gospel. Message. And. To. Hear. The. Call. To. Repent. And. To. Believe. Until. Week. On. Week. Say. No. Is. The. Most. Dangerous. Place.

[37:34] In. The. World. To. Be. Psalm. 95. Today. Today. If. You.

[37:44] Hear. This. Voice. Today. If. Your. Heart. Is. Stand. Today. You. Have. Opportunity.

[37:55] To. Trust. Christ. Take it. Jesus. Is. Betrayed.

[38:05] By. Jesus. Jesus. Is. Rejected. By. His. Own. People. Secondly. In. These. Parts. And. The. Highlands. And. Islands. We. We.

[38:16] Tend. To. Feel. A. Real. Connection. With. Our. People. We. Talk. A lot. About. People. If. You. Look. Into. Hebridean. Folklore. Or. If. You. Listen. To. The. Songs. That. Get. Sung. At. The. Mod.

[38:26] There. Songs. That. That. Go. Heavy. Into. The. The. Sense. Of. Belonging. Of. The. People. Or. Belonging. To. The. People. But.

[38:37] If. The. People. That. We. Came. From. And. If. The. People. That. We. Feel. Such. A. Sense. Of. Love. Towards. If. They. Turned. On. Us. And. If. They. Rejected. Us. Imagine.

[38:48] The. Heart. That. Would. Bring. Imagine. If. You. As. An. Islander. Were. Told. We. Don't. Want. To. See. You. On. This. Island. Ever. Again. Never. Come.

[38:58] Back. Imagine. The. Shame. In. The. Heart. Of. Such. Rejection. And. That. Was. Jesus. Experience.

[39:10] He. Was. Despised. He. Was. Rejected. By. His. Own. People. The. Arrest. Of. Jesus. Was. Not. Undertaken. By. A. Mob. Of. Criminals. Illegally.

[39:21] The. Arrest. Of. Jesus. Was. Administered. With. A. Full. Force. Of. The. Law. By. His. Own. People. Verse. Three. Judas. Came. To. The. Grove.

[39:31] Guiding. A. Detachment. Of. Soldiers. And. Some. Officials. From. The. Chief. Priests. And. Pharisees. The. Word. That's. Used. There. For. Detachment. Is. A. Word. That. Speaks. About. A. Crowd. That. Would. Have. Ranged.

[39:42] Somewhere. Between. The. Two. To. Three. Hundred. Mark. We're. Not. Talking. About. Half. A. Dozen. People. Judas. Came. With. An. Army. Of. People. Of.

[39:53] Officials. And. Soldiers. To. Arrest. Jesus. John. 1. 11. We. Read it. Months. Ago.

[40:03] Mary. He. Came. To. His. Own. And. His. Own. People. Did. Not. Receive. Him. That's. What. We. See. In. This. Chapter. One.

[40:14] Of. The. Commentators. Notes. The. Irony. They. Come. With. Lanterns. And. Torches. To. Arrest. The. Light. Of. The. World. They. Come. With. We. To. Arrest. The. Prince.

[40:24] Of. Peace. We. See. Isaiah. 53. Here. He. Was. Despised. And. Rejected. By. Men. A. Man. Of. Sorrows. And. Familiar.

[40:34] With. Suffering. And. Yet. In. The. Midst. Of. All. Of. This. As. The. Authorities. Closed. In. On. Jesus. As. The. Powers. Of. Hell. Become. Animated. As. The. Suffering. Begins. And. Then.

[40:45] Intensifies. Jesus. Ensures. That. He. Alone. Would. Endure. It. None. Of. His. Disciples. Would. Taste. It. Jesus.

[40:58] Saves. His. Disciples. From. Having. To. Suffer. Anything. Of. What. Was. Coming. His. Way. Look. At. Verse. Seven. Jesus.

[41:09] Asks. Them. Who. Is. It. You. Want. And. They. Said. Jesus. Of. Nazareth. I. Told. You. That. I. Am. He. Jesus. Answer. If. You. Are. Looking. For.

[41:29] Those. You. Gave. What. Do. We. See. There. We. See. The. Beginning. Of. What. Was. To. Continue. We. See. The.

[41:39] Beginning. Of. That. Substitutionary. Atonement. Jesus. In. This. Instance. And. Going. Forward.

[41:50] He. Shields. His. Disciples. From. The. Punishment. That. Was. Coming. Their. Way. And. He. Takes. It. All. In. Their. Place. One.

[42:02] Of. The. Commentators. Melvin. Says. The. Action. Of. Jesus. And. Drawing. The. Enmity. Upon. Himself. For. The. Freeing. Of. The. Disciples. Is. More. Generally. A. Depiction. Of.

[42:12] His. Whole. Work. Of. Atonement. He. Takes. Our. Place. Absorbing. Our. Guilt. And. All. Its. Implications. That. We. Might. Go. Free. Bearing.

[42:26] Shame. And. Scoffing. Rude. In. Their. Place. In. My. Place. In. Your. Place. Condemned.

[42:39] He. He. He. He. He. He. Betrayed. By. Jesus. Rejected.

[42:49] By. His. Own. People. And. Denied. By. His. Friend. Peter. And. Perhaps. This. Was. The. Hardest. Thing. Of. All. For.

[43:00] Jesus. To. Endure. Because. The. Intimacy. That. You. Had. With. Peter. Was. So. Real. Remember. In. John. 13. Jesus.

[43:12] Says. To. The. Disciples. Where. I. Am. Going. When. I. Leave. This. Room. This. Upper. Room. Where. I. Am. Going. You. Cannot. Follow. You. And.

[43:24] Peter. Protested. He. Said. Lord. Why. Can't. I. Follow. You. Now. I. Will. Lay. Down. My. Life. For. You. And. Peter. Protester. It. Was. An. Honest. One. It's. What. He. Felt.

[43:34] In. His. Heart. But. It. Was. Ignorant. Because. He. Didn't. Know. Himself. He. Couldn't. Go. Where. Jesus. Was. Going. And.

[43:52] As. He. Swings. The. Sword. Verse. Ten. Then. Simon. Peter. Who. Had a. Sword. Drew. It. And. Struck. The. High. Priest. Servant. Cutting. Off.

[44:02] His. Right. Ear. The. Servant's. Name. Was. Malchus. Jesus. Commanded. Peter. Put. Your. Sword. Away. And.

[44:13] Peter. May. Have. Had. The. Last. Bits. Of. Courage. That. Night. But. By. The. Morning. Even. Before. The. Night. Was. Out. It. Was. Gone. Because.

[44:26] When. He. Was. Dressed. By. A. Little. Girl. About. Whether. Or. Not. He. Was. A. Disciple. Of. Jesus. Peter. Would. Deny. Jesus. Three. Times. With.

[44:38] Curses. Peter. Would. Never. Have. Believed. That. He. Was.

[44:48] Capable. Of. Us. And. Yet. The. Lord. Knew. He. Still. Loved. First. Corinthians. Ten. Twelve. A.

[44:58] Word. For. Each. Of. Us. So. If. You. Think. You. Are. Standing. Firm. Be. Careful. That. You. Don't. Fall. The.

[45:11] Passion. Of. Christ. The. Beginnings. Of. Denied. By. Peter. Dejected. By. His. Own. People. Betrayed. By. Judas. Fourthly.

[45:22] The. Perseverance. Of. Jesus. For. You. And. I. When. We. Come. Under. Pressure. When. We. Are. Hit. With. Discouragement. After. Discouragement.

[45:33] As. In. Seasons. In. Life. We. Can. Be. We. Are. Prone. To. Give. Up. But. Jesus. As. The. Passion. Intensified.

[45:44] Through. The. Betrayal. Through. The. Rejection. Through. The. Denial. Jesus. Persevered. And. Having. Rebuked. Peter. For. Swinging. The. Sword. He. Then.

[45:54] Turns. To. Peter. And. He. Says. To. Him. Shall. I. Not. Drink. The. Cup. The. Father. Has. Given. The. And. The. Cup. In. The. Old. Testament. Was. Code. For.

[46:04] The. Judgment. Of. God. The. Cup. For. Those. Who. New. The. Old. Testament. You. That. This. Was. Something. That. Spoke. About. The. The. Wrath. Of. God. For. Human. Sin. And.

[46:15] Jesus. Saw. The. Cup. And. He. Saw. The. Cup. Being. Filled. Up. And. Your. Sin. And. Mine. Filled. That. Cup. Up. And. Jesus. Was. Intent. That.

[46:26] He. Would. Drink. It. That. He. Would. Lift. It. That. He. Would. Take. It. And.

[46:36] He. Would. Not. Put. It. Down. Until. The. Last. Drop. Of. Suffering. Was. Drained. And. He. Could. Cry. Out. On. That. Cross. It. Is.

[46:47] Finished. And. The. Perseverance. Of. Christ. The.

[46:58] Loving. Faithful. Determined. Dignified. Perseverance. Of. Christ. Shows. Us. Something. Of. The. Majesty. Of. Who. He. Who.

[47:08] He. Is. And. It. Should. Draw. Our. Love. Of. Him. And. They. Should. Draw. Worship.

[47:19] Of. Him. Jesus. Was. No. Helpless. Victim. Jesus. Was. Not. Caught. Up. In. A. In. A. Series. Of. Events. That. That. Caused.

[47:29] Him. To. To. Be. In. This. Position. Of. Suffering. Jesus. Knew. From. Before. The. Foundation. Of. The. World. That. He. Would. Stand. In. This. Position. Jesus. Knew. Everything. That.

[47:39] Was. Going. On. He. Knew. It. All. It. Is. Emphasized. In. The. Words. There. Nothing. Happened. That. Was. Beyond. The. Control. Of. Jesus. This. Was. The. Will. Of. The. Father. And.

[47:50] The. Son. And. The. Holy. Spirit. That. He. Would. Persevere. Through. All. Of. This. For. You. And.

[48:00] For. Me. J.C. Ryle. Says. This. Sorry. For. Quoting. So. Much. But. He. Says. It. Much. Better. Than. Me.

[48:10] Let. Us. Carefully. Remember. That. Our. Blessed. Lord. Suffered. And. Died. Of. His. Own. Free. Will. He. Did. Not. Die. Because. He. Could.

[48:21] Not. Help. It. He. Did. Not. Suffer. Because. He. Could. Not. Escape. All. The. Soldiers. Of. Pilate's. Army. Could. Not. Have. Taken. Him. If. He. Had. Not. Been. Willing. To. Be. Taken. They. Could.

[48:31] Not. Have. Hurt. The. Hair. Of. His. Head. If. He. Had. Not. Given. Him. Permission. But. Here. As. His. earthly. Mission. Jesus. Was. A. Willing. Suffer. He. Had. His. Heart. Set.

[48:41] On. Accomplishing. Our. Redemption. He. Loved. Us. And. Gave. Himself. For. Us. Cheerfully.

[48:52] Willingly. Gladly. In. Order. To. Make. Atonement. For. Our. Sins. Remember.

[49:04] The. Hymn. What. Kind. Of. Love. Is. This. That. Gave. Itself. For. Me. I. Am. The. Guilty. One. Yet.

[49:14] I. Go. Free. What. Kind. Of. Man. Is. This. That. Died. In. Agony. He. Who. Had. Done. No. Wrong. Was.

[49:25] Crucified. For. Me. What. Kind. Of. Man. Is. This. That. Laid. Aside. His. Throne. That. I. May. Know. The. Love. Of. God. What.

[49:36] Kind. Of. Love. Is. This. Finally. There's. The. Plea. Two.

[49:47] Minutes. And. The. Plea. Of. The. Gospel. Is. A. Clear. One. It's. Simply. This. Be.

[49:57] Saved. Be. Saved. And. There. Were. Those. On. That. Day. There. On. That. Day. As.

[50:07] Part. Of. That. Detachment. Even. As. They. Were. Under. Orders. To. Come. And. Arrest. Jesus. Even. As. They. Plotted. The. Downfall. Of. Christ. Even.

[50:18] In. The. Midst. Of. That. Dark. Evil. They. Were. Be. Given. The. Opportunity. To. Be. Saved. One. Last. Opportunity. Verse.

[50:30] Four. Jesus. Knowing. All. That. Was. Going. To. Happen. To. Went. Out. And. Asked. Who. Is. It. That. You. Want. Jesus. Of. Nazareth. They. Defied. I.

[50:42] Am. He. Jesus. Said. And. Judas. The. Traitor. Was. Standing. There. With. Them. When. Jesus. Said. I. Am. He. They. Drew. Back.

[50:53] And. Fell. To. Imagine. These. Men. As. We. Finish. Forced.

[51:04] To. Their. Knees. Against. Their. Will. Forced. To. Their. Knees. Picking. Themselves. Off. The. Ground. Such.

[51:16] Was. The. Power. Of. Christ. As. He. Declared. That. He. Was. The. Great. I. Am. They. Fell. Before. As.

[51:26] They. Got. Back. Up. They. Had. The. Opportunity. To. Repent. They. Had. The. Opportunity.

[51:39] To. Ask. For. Salvation. From. Jesus. And. To. Turn. From. Their. Sin. But. It. Seems. Like. None.

[51:49] Of. Them. Did. One. Common. Year. We. Have. A. Savior. Who. Is. Far. More. Willing. To. Save.

[52:00] Than. We. Are. Willing. To. Be. Saved. If. We. Are. Not. Saved. The. Fault. Is. All. Our. Own. You.

[52:16] Might. Look. At. These. Men. On. The. Ground. As. They. Pick. Their. Swords. Back. Up. And. Turn. Against. Jesus. And.

[52:28] We. Might. Say. How. Foolish. To. Treat. Jesus. This. Way. How. Foolish. Not. To. Believe. They. Are. At. Fault. But.

[52:38] What. About. You. What. About. Us. We. Have. A. Savior. Who. Is. Still. Far. More.

[52:48] Willing. To. Save. Us. Than. Some. Of. Us. Are. To. Be. Saved. And. If. We. Are. Not. Saved. This. Side. Of. The.

[52:58] Tross. Even. More. So. Than. Them. The. Fault. Is. All. Our. Excites.

[53:13] Me. That. One. Day. There. Will. Be. A. Loud. Noise. From. The. Heavens. And.

[53:24] Every. Eye. Will. See. That. Jesus. As. King. Is. Return. And. On. That. Day. Every.

[53:35] Knee. Will. Burn. And. Recognize. That. He. Is. Lord. That. He. Is. The. Great. I. Am. But. If. We. Wait. Till. That.

[53:45] Day. It. Too. Way. But. Today. You. And. I. Have.

[53:55] The. Opportunity. To. Have. The. Assurance. Of. Salvation. Look. Unto. Him. Believe.

[54:07] In. The. Lord. Jesus. Christ. And. Be. Be. Saved. Okay. Heavenly Father.

[54:29] We pray. As we look. To Jesus. Your son. We pray. That we would see him. Not as. A savior.

[54:39] But as our savior. We pray. That we would look. Unto him. In faith. And be saved. Holy Spirit. Show us.

[54:50] Our sin. Show us. Christ. As savior. And enable us. Not to go. Into. Eternity. At fault.

[55:02] But enable us. We pray. To go into. Eternity. Saying. That Jesus. Is our savior. And we pray. This in Jesus name.

[55:13] Amen. We sing. To conclude. Mission phase. Six. Seven. One. And the words. On the screen. There is a fountain.

[55:23] Filled. With blood. Amen. Amen. And I may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. And the love of God the Father.
