Short message and then Dan Maraig testimony
[0:00] A warm welcome to the service tonight. We're going to begin this time of worship and we'll sing to God's praise from Psalm 22, Psalm 22 and the first three stanzas of the Psalm.
[0:18] That's a Psalm that takes us to the cross. My God, my God, why hast thou me forsaken? Why so far art thou from helping me and from my words that roaring are? All day, my God, to thee I cry, yet I'm not heard by thee, and in the season of the night I cannot silent be. But thou art holy, thou that dost inhabit Israel's praise. Our fathers hoped in thee, they hoped, and thou didst them release.
[0:48] These three stanzas we sing in Gaelic. We'll remain seated to sing. And after we have sung, John McSween will lead us in prayer in Gaelic, please. more.

[21:26] If you could turn now please in your Bibles to Isaiah chapter 53, well, the end of 52. We're looking forward to hearing Dan, speaking tonight and sharing a little of his testimony.
[21:55] And we've heard a few testimonies over the past few weeks. We've heard quite a few testimonies over the past few years. And every testimony is different.
[22:08] The way that the Lord meets with us is very different, depending on who we are. And our stories are all different.
[22:19] But the one thing that is in common in all testimonies is that we end up coming to the cross. So Jesus may meet with us in a season of life when we're not expecting him.
[22:37] Think about the Apostle Paul. He's on the road to Damascus. He is looking for churches to close down. He's looking for Christians to kill.
[22:48] And Jesus meets him. It's the last thing he expected. His life is turned around and he's saved. We can think about the woman at the well, John 4, that we were looking at just a few weeks ago.
[23:00] She's trying to avoid everybody. She's in the heat of the day because she knows nobody will be at the well. Jesus meets with her. It's the last thing she expected. And yet that's what happened.
[23:11] And there are lots of testimonies like that. They vary in the place that Jesus meets us. But he always takes us to the cross. Because we can't be saved until we see the cross.
[23:26] Until we see our sin and what he did for us in order for us to be saved. And so Dan wants the passage from Isaiah 52 into 53 to be read tonight.
[23:40] And it's a passage where we very clearly see the cross. Isaiah 52, I'm reading at verse 13. And the servant that's spoken of here is Jesus.
[23:55] See, my servant will act wisely. He will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. Just as there were many who were appalled at him.
[24:06] His appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man. And his form marred beyond human likeness. So will he sprinkle many nations.
[24:17] And kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were not told they will see. And what they have not heard they will understand.
[24:28] Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? He grew up before him like a tender shoot. And like a root out of dry ground, He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him.
[24:43] Nothing in his appearance that we should desire. He was despised and rejected by men. A man of sorrows and familiar with suffering.
[24:54] Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows.
[25:07] Yet we considered him stricken by God, Smitten by him and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities.
[25:19] The punishment that brought us peace was upon him. And by his wounds we are healed. We all like sheep have gone astray.
[25:30] Each of us has turned to his own way. And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted.
[25:41] Yet he did not open his mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep before our shearers is silent, So he did not open his mouth.
[25:52] By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living. For the transgression of my people he was stricken.
[26:06] He was assigned a grave with the wicked. And with the rich in his death, Though he had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the Lord's will to crush him And cause him to suffer.
[26:22] And through the Lord, And though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering, He will see his offspring and prolong his days.
[26:33] And the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. After the suffering of his soul, He will see the light of life and be satisfied.
[26:44] By his knowledge, My righteous servant will justify many, And he will bear their iniquities. Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, And he will divide the spoils with the strong.
[26:59] Because he poured out his life unto death, And was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
[27:15] Amen. And may God bless that reading of his word to us. I'm going to say very little tonight.
[27:27] I'm going to leave Dan to speak. But, One of the things I think that is most striking, In the gospels, Is the brevity, With which the crucifixion is described.
[27:47] In Mark, And at chapter 15, And verse 24, We have the description of the crucifixion. And it simply says this, And they crucified him.
[28:01] You know, The most significant event in all of history. And we have a report of it in four words.
[28:13] We're just given the bare facts of what happened. What happened. But if we want to know why it happened. And if we want to see what was going on.
[28:26] At the cross. We need to rewind. Back into the Old Testament. And we can go back 700 years to Isaiah.
[28:37] And we have a crystal clear picture of Jesus. And we have a very accurate description.
[28:48] Of death by crucifixion. Although it had never been devised at this point. And we can go back further. To a thousand years before the death of Jesus.
[29:01] To Psalm 22. And we hear the words of Jesus. That he spoke on the cross. Prophesied by the psalmist.
[29:12] And we're given an insight. Into something of the suffering. That Jesus had to endure. And we could rewind even further.
[29:24] To Genesis chapter 3. Where we see Adam and Eve fall into sin. And no sooner had they fallen into sin. That God made a promise.
[29:35] And the promise was. That he would send the Savior. And the Savior would be his son. So tonight.
[29:48] Let's just once more. Be encouraged to look to Jesus. To lift our eyes from ourselves. And from this world.
[30:00] And look to Jesus. And look to that cross. It was planned. It wasn't a tragedy.
[30:11] It wasn't an accident. It was always the plan. That Jesus would come. And live. And die. On the cross.
[30:22] And rise. And rise. And that plan speaks to us. About the. The magnitude of God's love for us. That he would go to this extent.
[30:34] To save us. He took up our infirmities. He carried. Our sorrows. He carried.
[30:45] Our sorrows. He was pierced. For our transgressions. He was crushed. For our iniquities. The punishment.
[30:56] That brought us peace. For us peace. Was upon him. And by his wounds. We are healed. Let's be encouraged. To look to Jesus.
[31:07] To visit that cross. To see what our sin did. To see what he did on our behalf. And to trust him. That we may be saved. That we may have a testimony. That someday we can share.
[31:18] We'll pray. Heavenly Father we thank you for your word. We thank you for the wonder of the cross.
[31:30] The cross. The cross. The cross. The cross. And your grace. The cross. the wonder of the cross, the power of the cross, the amazing plan of the cross that made it possible for us to be saved. He who was innocent took the place of the guilty. He who was without sin became cursed to take the curse of our sin from us. By his wounds we are healed. By his death we are given life that is eternal. Thank you Lord Jesus that you take us by the hand to the cross.
[32:16] You show us our sin. You show us your love for us and as we survey that cross with eyes of faith, as we seek forgiveness, as we look to him, we thank you that we have the promise that we are saved, that we are forgiven. Everyone who looks to him shall be saved.
[32:43] Thank you Lord for the story of Dan's salvation that we'll hear just shortly. We pray that each one of us would survey the wondrous cross and know that we too share in that story of redemption, salvation, that our sins are being paid for, that our salvation has been secured. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen. We'll sing the third hymn that Dan has again chosen and then after that I'll sit down and Dan will come forward and stand up. 755 in Mission Plays when I survey the wondrous cross.
[33:20] When I survey the wondrous cross, O gracious Prince of Christ of glory died. My riches gave thy doubt but lost, and poor content on all my pride.
[34:10] Forbidded Lord that I should boast, sin in the death of Christ my God. All the wind plays the charming host, I sacrifice them to his love. He promised in his hands his feet, for all our love, no may you die.
[35:02] His hands such love, no may you die. Forbidwest and sorrow, no may you die. And there's such love and sorrow breathe, our hearts composed so rich a crown.
[35:19] Where thou, O hell, of nature mine, that where an offering far to soul, But so amazing, so divine, relance my soul, my life, my all.
[36:07] There's a lot more people here than I expected to hear an amateur speak. But I just want to introduce myself, because there's an awful lot of people here I don't know.
[36:24] I was born in the little village of Marig at 6.30pm on Thursday the 17th of October 1940.
[36:41] That makes me an old man. I was at Communions in Oog and I was introduced to the Reverend William MacLeod.
[36:54] As a D-Reg member. Now those of you who are familiar with registrations will know that that was in 1986.
[37:07] Now a D-Reg is pretty shabby looking now. Body work is needing repairs and the engines are a bit smoky and difficult to start.
[37:22] But the most dangerous thing about a D-Reg is that it's difficult to stop. So when I start, if somebody will give me a cough here and there, it's just to make sure that I do stop in time.
[37:37] The Marig village at that time was quite a lively village spiritually. There was 24 Communicant members within its boundaries.
[37:53] There's only two now. There was no other commodities that would attract anybody except those who had ties to it.
[38:05] There was no road, no telephone system, nothing of that nature. There was no other things. You were dependent on your feet to walk to Tarbert and to the scenic path down the Laxdale Lost.
[38:21] If you wanted medical aid, you had to walk there to get a nurse or a doctor. and it all depended where the nurse or the doctor were at the time because they would have to go back with you and treat anybody who was needing treatment. Otherwise you went by bus and just got off the bus above Marig and walked down the moor and that was quite daunting in itself if you didn't know where you were going. There wasn't a path or anything like that. But yet it was the most amazing place for God provided us with everything we needed. We had a loch that had fish for our food and we had crafts that provided the rest of our food. We had cattle and everything else that cattle provided for and sheep and all these things that God created for our good. And people were thankful for God, to God for his provision for them. It was an amazing place at the time growing up as a young lad.
[39:26] I was the youngest child there up to the age of nine, almost nine when the next child was born. And probably that left me with a bit of an inferiority complex because I was a sort of a rag being tossed about and kicked about and pushed about. But I survived up to this time.
[39:56] The amazing thing for me is that I wasn't well, I wasn't a strong, robust young boy. But I'm the one who has outlived all the others in the village apart from two who are no longer staying in the place. And that really amazes me that I'm the sole survivor of the school group that I went to.
[40:25] We had a school there. I didn't like school. The only time I liked school was when I was repairing it many years afterwards. I came to Tarbert school when I was 11 because the local school closed.
[40:43] And I didn't like the football pitch. And it caused me many problems because I was usually late coming into class.
[40:55] And that was punishment in itself. But I also learned some things in school. I learned from the teachers who taught us religious education.
[41:10] And I remember, well, going through the book of Exodus and listening to Mr. MacAskill. And you had to listen to Mr. MacAskill. And if you didn't, it was to your detriment really.
[41:24] Because you listened to him and you remembered what he said to you. And when he came back to check that you did remember it. Well, to avoid things, you tried your best.
[41:36] I remember as a young boy coming to church at Tarbert. Probably at the age of nine or ten. I'm not sure exactly.
[41:51] And there was a young student preaching from the Old Testament, Book of Kings, second Book of Kings, chapter 6.
[42:03] And he was talking about Elisha and his servant. And the servant got up early one day. And he looked and the enemy were gathered about the camp where Elisha was.
[42:19] They were trying to capture Elisha. And the servant panicked. And he ran into his master and he said, Master, what shall we do?
[42:33] And the calm man of God said, fear not, he said. Because those who are with us are far numerous than those who are out with us.
[42:45] And Elisha prayed. And he prayed like this. Oh God, he said. Open the young man's eyes that he may see.
[42:57] And God opened the young man's eyes. And he saw. And the place was full of chariots of fire and horses about Elisha.
[43:14] And I knew at that age that nobody could open my eyes except God. God was the one who could open eyes and show us something in a different light.
[43:28] And from a different perspective. It was good if my testimony stopped there and that I had submitted to God and all that.
[43:39] But God stayed with me and I departed from God. That's the year. I accumulated and I loved listening to the people of God when they came to visit us.
[43:52] And to hear their talk among themselves. And to hear their talk among themselves. Oh God, I dealt with them. And oh God, loved them and gave himself for them. And I just didn't apply it to myself.
[44:05] When I left school, I went off to the mainland to learn a trade. And I was able to do that. Yeah. I think my inferiority complex followed me there because I certainly didn't leave it at home.
[44:24] And I suppose Dutch courage at times was required and I thought you could get it out of a glass or a bottle.
[44:36] But let me tell you and let me warn you that it doesn't work. And I am the proof of it not working.
[44:48] I came back home when my apprenticeship was complete. Started working within the rest council. Went to church occasionally.
[45:03] Met a young lady from Kiles Galpe. We got done reasonably well, I think. Must have done because she became a wife in 1968.
[45:18] She was a Christian girl. And I thank God for her.
[45:29] And for the help she gave me and for being so supportive of me. We had three of her family.
[45:42] Mari, Jan and Angus. I just pushed her over here. Just know. I've had many scripts in life. I've had many scripts in life. I've had accidents and numerous things that only God could see me from.
[45:54] I remember being out and aboard. I remember being out and aboard. Tending sheep out and locked in Loch Sea for three. I was in a boat. I was in a boat. I was in a boat. I was in a boat. Tending sheep out and locked in Loch Sea for three to the very far end of Loch Sea for three. And falling off the. You died if I could see from the whole boat.
[46:07] I've had many scrapes in life, I've had accidents and numerous things that only God could save me from. I remember being out in a boat, tending sheep out in Loch Seaforth, out at the very far end of Loch Seaforth and falling off the boat into the sea on a cold November day.
[46:39] And I want to tell you four things that I noticed about Loch Seaforth that day. It's steep and it's cold and it's wet and it's long. And by the time I got ashore, all that was in my mind was, I'll be all right when I get home. And the same applies to my life here on earth. I'll be all right when I get home. How do I get home? Well, there's no other way except Jesus. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. That's his own words to us. I am the way. Nobody else. I am. And that takes us back to the title God gave himself to Moses at the burning bush. I am. Who will I say simply? I am. And that's the title. We call each other by our father's name and our grandfather's names and all that down the line.
[48:05] But God didn't have an ancestor. God is God and there was no other God before him and there would be no other gods after him. So he's the one to whom we have to submit and to bow the knee. I cut it on in life and the village. Old people seemed to die away and my father was looking after the church, mission hall. He did everything that was required to keep going, cleaning it and making sure the heating was on and the lights were on for service.
[48:51] We had missionaries preaching for us and everything was prepared for them. And when my father stopped, I was unable to do that, I automatically took over the chore of looking after the church without even thinking about it. It was just an automatic thing for me. I just did it. That was it.
[49:16] This, about this time, the Lord was, was again dealing with me and the word of God was being made precious to me and I was reading it and hearing it and understanding some of it and some of it was, most of it was, most of it was being applied to me and I was wondering how the preachers knew my situation because their sermons used to be so direct that I would think that somebody had told them about my way of life or my standing at that time regarding the gospel. I couldn't understand it. But there's the all-knowing, all-seeing God at work in a person's life.
[50:02] I attended many meetings and my heart used to be sore and hurting when fellowships were going on and I couldn't join them because I didn't feel that I was good enough to join the people of God in their fellowships.
[50:30] A lot of things like that are a burden and they stop people enjoying the fellowship of the people of God because they don't think they're good enough to be among them. Don't let it stop you like it stopped me because the people of God are the most welcoming people you'll ever meet in your life's journey.
[50:58] They want you to be with them. They enjoy your company and they should be your teacher and your mentor so that what they know might be imparted to you and what you know makes them feel young at heart.
[51:19] Makes them feel that they've got something to contribute toward your well-being. The word of God, as I said, was being made precious to me and I remember sitting in the church down the road there and sitting behind the table and my heart almost torn within me that I wasn't sitting.
[51:48] I was sitting with the people of God at the table of Christ at the table of God and I just felt really almost sick sitting where I was when I knew that I wanted to sit with the children of God.
[52:08] And I thought then that I wouldn't sit there again. But the devil doesn't let you get away with it that easily. The devil would come and tell me that, well, you're not capable of standing in front of people and you're not capable of doing the things they do.
[52:33] You're not capable of singing like they do and the likes of that. You're not capable of singing like they do and the likes of that.
[52:47] You're not capable of singing like it. I thought that, well, I was, you know, just trying to say, you're not capable of singing. I thought, yeah. You are sure. That's why I was there to be. Well, I didn't let them win. I went ahead with a struggle because eventually I said to myself, like the leper long ago who said, if we stay here we die, if we go there we die.
[53:10] So I went. And I sat at the Lord's table, because Christ had called me to the Lord's table.
[53:24] I heard many sermons, appealing sermons, and only Christ, only Christ, and him crucified, as we heard, has the power to draw you.
[53:40] It offends me in a way when I see, and I did work in churches where you see a cross on the wall and Christ on it.
[53:55] When you see the cross as an emblem of good workmanship, craftsmanship, polished hardwood timber, with shampooed edges, and an image of Christ in it.
[54:13] Oh, don't let us kid ourselves. That was not the cross of Christ. The cross of Christ was the crudest bit of joy in our work that ever Christ laid eyes on, and they saw a lot of carpentry in his time.
[54:29] It was two pieces of rough trees tied together at the top with a bit above it so that it would be made known who was being crucified and why.
[54:44] You remember the title? But Pilate was asked to change. Don't write that, they said.
[54:56] And his response was, What I have written, I have written. And the title was, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
[55:09] King of the Jews. Is he your king? Is he your king? Nailed to the cross. The cross is an empty cross.
[55:22] The tomb is an empty tomb. And that is our joy tonight. That Christ is no longer in the tomb. Christ is not on the cross.
[55:34] Christ is at the right hand of glory. Interceding for us. And if anything else gives us any hope at all, it's the intercession of Christ on our behalf.
[55:50] I had another problem after that. Somebody caught me out trying to sing a Gaelic psalm. And I had no help.
[56:03] Nobody to tell me to help me or to instruct me. And I struggled on. This gracious lady once told me that if I stopped smoking, maybe it would help me in my singing.
[56:19] And with all due respect, I think the people who have had to listen to me singing over the years will think that this lady made us an error of judgment.
[56:34] I think really she could have said, well, if you stopped singing and carry on smoking, it will be easier for us.
[56:47] But I carried on anyway. My singing didn't improve that much, but I stopped smoking. Let's put it like that. These were the kinds of people I enjoyed being with who were straight forward, full pride, who would tell you what they thought of you and tell you how to improve your life and things like that.
[57:12] There are few and far between now those who grew up with me as I grew up in faith and in these little surrounding villages like Ternishater and Scadabay and Art Wold and Avon Sue and these places we used to go to quite often.
[57:33] What a blessing it was to be involved in that. I remember going to Rhenigadale with the minister twice a year by boat and a few of, quite a few of the people from the village and some from Tarbert used to go with us and they used to sing Gaelic Psalms all the way there and all the way back in the boat and the cliffs on both sides of Ruffseaforth would echo the singing back to you and it was absolutely wonderful to be part of that to hear it and even the people of Rhenigadale would come to the hilltops just to listen.
[58:24] I also remember we had special meetings out in Bariq that would last for the best part of a week. I I don't think there's anybody here who attended them except one person and that's Flora Anne and these were special times even for a non member of the church.
[58:53] I remember it well. the Reverend Duncan McKinnon used to be one of the ones who visited us regularly. He was a young man a student then and if his voice was good in latter years it was amazing then.
[59:12] And his uncle Sandy and people like that yardassig people would come sometimes in the back of a lorry and they would the road was only halfway down then they would come off the lorry and walk down through the village and at the end of the night the people of the village would walk back up with them to the lorry singing and rejoicing on the way.
[59:33] We've lost a lot of that. We've lost all of it out of the way. Does God stop?
[59:52] There does he leave you to your own devices? Does God say to you well you've done all right I'll just take you home.
[60:08] The troubles are over now. No, my troubles weren't over. I had many problems. I had problems with my back since 1966. Other problems happened in 1966 as well but I won't go into that.
[60:24] Some of you will remember. Yeah I had bowel cancer in 1999.
[60:38] I survived that. I had chemo the year afterwards which nearly got the better on me.
[60:48] Let's put it like that. Don't want to discourage anybody who has to go through that. Some people I know didn't have any problems with it but I did. I had big problems with it and I remember one night being in hospital in Stornaway I think it was during my fifth treatment and they seemed to overlap because my problems were getting worse and worse and this night a minister walked in and he went to the far end of the six bed ward and I heard him praying with a young man from Achmour who was up there and the ward was full and he walked back down when his son was praying he walked back down and he stopped at the end of my bed and he said to me do you know where I've come from just now and I said
[61:49] I don't know he said I was at the point communions I was at the point communions he says do you know what text the minister had oh I couldn't guess I said well he said the text was the disciples in the storm and he walked out he never asked how I was never asked where I was from never asked if I was better or worse he just walked out I knew enough about the disciples in the storm and I knew that they were there because Jesus asked them to go into the boat and to go across to the other side but Jesus was with them in the storm and my mind started working around these thoughts and pulling me out of my despair I'm reluctant to tell you the story without telling you the minister's name a minister who has become a friend with his congregation the reverend
[63:06] Kenny Ferguson who didn't know me I knew him from a distance but that was the first time I ever spoke to him God doesn't leave you he might see you in trouble and despair like that but he knows you're there and he sends his servant to tell you that Jesus is with you and Jesus will help you and Jesus will provide for you and take you safely ashore and calm water that's what Jesus does the Bible tells us that we sin daily in thought and in word and in deed well we got an awareness of sin that we didn't have and I wonder if we did that and we see that in thought is the first one we can control our words and we can control our deeds but it's very very difficult to control our thoughts and you and I will despair at the things that we might think and we might just lose all our confidence in our thoughts
[64:40] I want to read for you some of the words of a friend of mine a friend I've never met and a friend who I shall not meet on the side of the grave but I hope someday that I'll meet some of the ones who have encouraged me and helped me along life's journey and this friend was one who gave me confidence not in the things that are perfect but in the things that are troublesome and tiresome in life's journey and the person I'm talking about is the apostle of the north Donald of Natasha and those who know me will know that I refer to him quite a bit here and there but what we're hearing the reverend but loud talking about the cross this is this is what he says what the saviour thus hath done and suffered in his people's place is my soul's alone foundation and not any inbrought grace this my shelter is and refuge as I go to death and grave this will save me bring me home where visions of the lamb
[66:24] I'll have oh but come so vile a creature one of nature's own clean ere expect to reach the presence glorious in its spotless shin yet the precious blood of Jesus will my filthiness remove and yet I shall reach the palace where the fullness of his love hard the illness of age has hailed me withered now my wanted hue all my strength is passing from me every power fades from you for the web is almost ready and the shuttle ceaseless flies and that feeble mortal body at death very portal lies I'm going to say them in gaelic because
[67:25] I know it's lost very little of in translation but this is what it says in gaelic is a good whom let's see you foreign foreign What are you doing?
[68:44] the way this is where we're heading this is where age has taken us this is where we must all go and rest until christ comes again he's promised to come again and receive us unto himself i remember the words of a song of long ago that said walk tall walk straight and look the world right in the eye well i can only deal with one of these personally because i'm initially half shorter than i was at the last measure i am staggering when i'm walking but i can look the world in the eye because the world and i have the same condemnation without christ i can look the world straight in the eye and say you fell the same as i fell you need a savior the same as i need a savior where do you find him at the cross of calvary at the cross bow your knee at the cross confess your sins admit that you can't do it on your own and ask christ to do it for you and accept that everything is done the law demands of you and me that we live totally perfect lives totally perfect lives if we go wrong on one point of the law we're guilty of every other point of the law the law says do and live grace says live for all is done live for all is done everything is done the preparation is done i'm going to prepare a place for you so that we'll be together again where i am you may be also may we all gather there when our time on earth is over and may god grant us grace to acknowledge that only he can bring us there heavenly father heavenly father heavenly father heavenly father heavenly father we give thee thanks that thou art the god who is able and willing to help us along these troubled paths on which we live where we struggle and fall and yet we know that the love of god can surmount all these obstacles and bring us home and if anybody here tonight feels that his sins are too numerous and too in years may he know that the blood of christ and only the blood of christ is able to cleanse us from all our iniquities or before us and bless this congregation of thy people and add thy blessing to us as we travel to our homes for jesus is we ask it amen amen thank you dan we're going to sing uh 495 in mission praise and it's the tune martyrdom oh for a heart to praise my god a heart from sin set free a heart that always feels thy blood so freely shed for me a heart resigned submissive meek my great redeemer's throne where only christ is heard to speak where jesus reigns alone i will sing the whole of this hymn to god's praise
